Description

About the Book

The cyborg as an analytical lens on how bodies, technologies and data infrastructures reconfigure presence, embodiment and agency.

Book Synopsis

What can technological phenomena such as cyborgs reveal about presence and data infrastructures in the age of digital platforms? This issue foregrounds the cyborg not as a metaphor for hybridity but as an analytical lens. With emphasis on AI, datafication, robotics and digital health, it asks how bodies, technologies and infrastructures become newly entangled, and how the boundaries between bodies, technologies and social order are continuously produced and transformed. Drawing on feminist, disability and crip theory, it examines mediated presence, embodiment and agency across platform societies.

About the Author

Diego Compagna is professor of sociology at Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften München, where he holds the chair "Theories of Societal Transformation". His research in science and technology studies focuses on human-machine interaction, social robotics, and the social theory of distributed agency.

Melike Şahinol heads the research field Science, Technology and Society; at the Orient-Institut Istanbul (Max Weber Foundation). Her work in sociology of science, technology and medicine addresses neuro- and biotechnologies, 3D printing, processes of cyborgization, and digitalization, examining the entanglements of bodies, technologies and society.

Heiko Stoff is a historian of science and technology at Medizinische Hochschule Hannover (MHH). His research concerns the history of the body, biopolitics, and the regulation of substances and technologies in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
