Worse maps

This is my 3rd Garmin handheld GPS I have GPSmap60Cx and GPSMAPS64st.The map on the GPS 60 the where add to the chip and 64 came with the unit. The 65's map are the worst they lack detail streams are missing even named ones. This not good for search and rescue work. There are maps to South and central America a place I will never go. There some much add that when a tried to do an update I was told there was no room. That I would need to add a memory card. This is the first time the i am not happy with a Garmin Product.

So far this 65s is working as advertised.

Have had the GPS 4-5 weeks. The set up was easy, the unit has new features that work good. Starting back in 2007 I bought my first Garmin handheld GPS. Have enjoyed Garmin GPS's ever since. Used the handhelds for Geocaching.

GPS and Satellite Systems Excellent

I purchased this device recently as a replacement for an Oregon 650. My use has been frequent. The accuracy of the Tracks is very good and the system for management and storage of Track data with BaseCamp is very good. The use of buttons and keypad on the device is tedious and cumbersome in comparison to the Oregon 650 touch screen. For my purposes it does what I require but the overall software and user interface is out of date and in need of an overhaul.

A little clunky

These Garmin's are not as easy to use as Google Maps or Google Earth, but what I do is use those platforms on my PC to map out my planned route following rivers or whatever and them download that KLM file to my Garmin and it shows up great and will work in the field with no Internet access.

Good GPS

Functions nicely, but prepare for a lot of menu scrolling if you are new to the product. Once you figure out the menu, you can do a lot with it.

Would be a GREAT handheld if...

The feature list is compelling, it is accurate, the screen is the best I've seen in direct sunlight, and the new TopoActive maps are sooo much better than the older Garmin preloaded maps. BUT, I don't understand why you continue to skimp on the internal memory of this device, you ship it with an old TopoActive version on the 8GB internal memory, but you MUST add a memory card to update the maps to the current versions.

Garmin GPSMAP® 65s: Reliable

I originally had the Garmin GPSMAP® 66sr, which is a fantastic unit. However, when I realized it came with a non-replaceable lithium-ion battery, I decided to switch to the GPSMAP® 65s—and I couldn't be happier with the choice. The 65s runs on standard AA batteries, whether rechargeable or disposable, giving me complete flexibility. This means I can use the unit for years without worrying about battery degradation forcing me to replace the entire device. While it's technically possible to change the battery in a lithium-ion model, if not done by the manufacturer, it can create some uncertainty about the unit's long-term reliability. With the 65s, I don’t have that concern. I get the same rugged build, excellent satellite reception (thanks to multi-band GNSS), and reliable Garmin mapping features, all with the added benefit of user-replaceable power. It’s a perfect choice for anyone who values longevity and field reliability in their GPS unit.

Difficult to use basic functions

I wish I would’ve sent this back before using from the start it’s been a waste of time and money compared to much simpler cheaper products. But hey the next time I’m in Antarctica and can’t get service this might come in handy.

GPSMAP 65s fills the need

I bought this unit at the end of December 2024 and I am learning to use all the great features before heading to the woods. I will be getting the Hunt View + MAPS micro SD card and then the 65s will be perfect.

Liked the Dakota 20 better!

The Dakota 20 fit my needs better than the 65s. I liked the touch screen better, and paired with BirdsEye I had a better idea of the terrain I was in. The TOPO U.S. 24K Southeast v3 map does not have the detail I would have on downloaded BirdsEye maps. Unfortunately , I no longer have my Dakota 20 and BirdsEye is no longer offered.

The Garmin 65s

Not exactly sure why I tried the 65s again as my last one only lasted about a year before failing to turn on. I like what it is but such a short lifespan is disappointing

The perfect GPS for me

I wanted a multi-band GPS that runs on AA batteries. Most of the newer GPS units come with integrated LION batteries. This unit allows for AA alkaline or NiMH. I purchased NiMH batteries and a charger to go with it. I like being able to have this option, as I use AA batteries to power other devices as well. AA batteries are also widely available if for some reason I don't have my NiMHs with me. I also really like the multi-band capabilities and the powerful antenna of this model. This unit picks up a signal right in the middle of my house. I also like the BaseCamp app which makes it easy to upload to all of my Garmin products. Lastly, the form factor really works for me. While the higher-end Garmin GPS in the hiking/handheld space come with more features and two-way communication (a feature not needed for me), they are larger units in the hand. I look forward to using this unit for years to come!
