About the Author

Award-winning author Laurie Wallmark writes picture book biographies of women in STEM as well as fiction. Her books have earned six starred trade reviews, been chosen as Junior Library Guild Selections, and received awards such as Outstanding Science Trade Book, Best STEM, Crystal Kite, and Parents' Choice Gold Medal. Laurie's books have been translated into seven foreign languages. Her titles include Grace Hopper: Queen of Computer Code, Dino Pajama Party, and The Queen of Chess. Laurie has an MFA in Writing from VCFA and is a former software engineer and computer science professor. Kyle Beckett was in the third grade and sold a drawing of a bluebird wearing sunglasses at lunch. His payment? One chocolate chip cookie! From that first commission on, he knew he wanted to be an illustrator. It wasn't until much later (he had almost finished eating his cookie) that he decided to be a writer, too. Growing up in Rockford, Illinois, he started putting drawings and words on every piece of paper he could find, and maybe even a wall or two.
