1. The flashlight is so dim that you can barely see it, even in the dark. 2. As others have mentioned, changing the batteries is a bizarre and frustrating process. Complete waste. We didn’t even buy this (it was a “gift” from a neighbor) and I still feel ripped off, because now I have to expend effort to throw it out.

Sucks. Near impossible to get the tiny screws out to put batteries in. Not worth it.

Cute flashlight, functional and screws closed to keep batteries away from your little one. My 2 year old loves it.

Not all that bright and not sure I'll ever replace the batteries as it's a true pain. Why make that so difficult??

very cheaply made, the paint itself looks scraped, looks like there's even fingerprint on one side, feels rough. On the plus side nothing is broken, and the light works! It's an OK FOR NOW light.
Can't put batteries in??

How I wish I had read the reviews but this was part of my first purchase from M&D and I had heard only good things about them. I put the personalized flashlight away for Christmas and just took it out to install batteries. While I completely understand the need to secure the batteries, accessing the battery compartment is difficult and the use of two screws is clearly overkill. The inside screw is totally unnecessary. I'm glad I also bought a little pink lantern from another vendor because I don't expect this one to last very long.I tried to give it zero stars but the review is not accepted without at least one star.

I bought this for my 4 year old. We lost power last month and she wanted a flashlight to use like all the grown ups. At first, I did not notice the little screw that needed to be undone, but once I did, replacing the batteries were easy. Like everyone else, the light didn’t turn on when I first tried it. Turned out that it’s because I had tightened the screw too much. Loosen it a bit and it’ll work perfectly. It’s not as bright since it’s a kid’s flashlight and obviously not LED. My kids tend to look into the flashlight or shine it into each other’s eyes so I’m glad it lights up, but dull enough not to be blinding. My kids have tossed and dropped this flashlight many times and it’s very durable. I have no major complaints.
SO disappointing!

We bought this for my grandaughter to go with a tent we bought to give for Christmas. This flashlight has been nothing but trouble. It doesn't work longer than 10 minutes with new batteries. There has to be a defect in the production of it as I see so many others have commented on the same thing. It's very disappointing to a 3 year old who just wants to play in the tent with her friendly "buggie" flashlight she calls it. We have found a lightweight flashlight around the house to give to her until we replace it with something equally cute but WORKS.

We can't even open the flashlight to put batteries in. Total bummer. My mom unfortunately bought a few as gifts. It feels cheaply made also. I was surprised as Melissa & Doug products usually have good quality.

Unusable and can't return

I decided to try this despite the bad reviews, because I couldn't find anything else like it on the market. My intention was to install the batteries and make sure that it worked properly before giving it to my 3.5 year old niece for Christmas. I was going to return it if my experience was like most of the other reviewers and it didn't work correctly. First off, however, you find out on the packing slip that you can't return something to this company unless it's untouched in its original packaging. So much for that - I had to rip open the clamshell to get to the flashlight and its instructions for installing the batteries (to get to the battery compartment you have to remove a tiny screw and unlock/press a hard plastic tab while turning the lens cover). It took a great deal of strength to get the lens cover to turn at all past the locking tab, and it finally ground to a stop and WILL NOT unscrew any further. So I can't get the cover open to even try the batteries, and I can't return it because the clamshell is damaged. I am so angry that I now have a useless and defective item that I can't even return - so I just wasted that money. They should be ashamed to still sell this with with such poor quality workmanship. Where is their quality control, especially with such specific negative feedback? They didn't need to cut corners in assembly/materials just to make money on this. I would have paid twice as much for this item up front if it had actually worked as it is supposed to.

My granddaughter received this as a Christmas gift. I was never able to get it to work despite trying several brand new batteries. I contacted Melissa and Doug, and to their credit, they sent me a new one which I received in a week. The new one barely works in that the light is not bright at all. I even went into a completely dark room and the light was barely visible. Not at all worth the money. Very disappointed in this product from Melissa and Doug.

This is not the quality product I would expect from Melissa and Doug. Right out of the package with new batteries it does not work. I'm glad I was trying it out before putting it under the Christmas tree so my kids aren't as disappointed as I am.

My daughter received this flashlight as a birthday gift. It is very cute, and she couldn't wait to use it. Imagine our disappointment, and her tears (she's two), when it wouldn't work when the batteries were inserted. It's a shame that the light doesn't operate as intended; it's adorable.
