Book Synopsis

A debut slow-burn work-nemesis romance set in a world where cryptids and monsters are a part of life . . . and someone has to do the paperwork.

Working in human resources was not what Alexys had in mind when she joined Entity, the private company that categorizes and manages the world's cryptids. But after her dad was killed on the job as a Warden in the Appalachian Mountains, she was filled with noble ideas of carrying on his legacy . . . from the safety of a desk. Alexys dreams of climbing the corporate ladder while managing the Appalachian Wardens and sparring with Nic, the frustrating (and annoyingly attractive) Director of Research and Cataloging.

When one of Alexys's new Wardens goes missing after inquiring about a mysterious and highly dangerous monster, her chances of promotion disappear along with him. Determined to save her career--and to shield the Warden's family from the trauma she experienced after losing her father on the job--she marches off into the monster-infested wilderness to find him herself.

Meanwhile, Nic, with ambitions of becoming the youngest Entity employee to discover a new monster, follows Alexys on her hunt. But the work nemeses are about to discover why the Appalachian Mountains are the last place you want to find yourself after dark. Among mountains older than bones, the jackalopes and ghouls are the least of their worries . . .

Review Quotes

Praise for (Mostly) Human Resources
"Welcome to (Mostly) Human Resources, in which the bureaucracy and the spooks are equally frightening. Viall's debut is a tongue-in-cheek delight, pulling from multiple genres to create a tale that is both unsettling and cozy--whimsical horror, if I had to give it a name. The Appalachian ambience and aesthetics are hauntingly delicious. The romance is tender, yet snarky, featuring protagonists who can't stand one another (my favourite dynamic!) unwillingly finding love whilst hunting for things that go bump in the night. Five creepy stars!"
--Brigitte Knightley, New York Times bestselling author of The Irresistible Urge to Fall For Your Enemy

"Both charming and creepy, (Mostly) Human Resources combines cryptid hunting action with a tantalizing rivals-to-lovers romance, set in the mysterious and definitely monster-infested Appalachian Mountains. Viall's debut is a bingeable, unique, and effortless exploration of why you should stay the hell out of the woods. Corporate HR meets Supernatural; paranormal readers will devour this!"
--Saratoga Schaefer, USA Today bestselling author of Trad Wife

"Creepy cryptids, a compelling slow burn romance, and corporate humor blend together perfectly in this excitingly unique debut from Grace Viall. (Mostly) Human Resources is a must-read for anyone looking for a great horrormance, delivering on both a delicious workplace enemies to lovers romance arc and truly terrifying encounters out in the woods. This book will delight fans of Supernatural and The X-Files and leave readers yearning for the next installment!"
--Mallory Marlowe, USA Today bestselling author of Love at First Sighting

"This was such a fun, unique, spooky gem of a story! I was locked in from the very start, and I couldn't put it down until the pieces came together. Viall's debut truly has it all: intrigue, cryptids, romance, humor, and the unrelenting stress of modern employment. I will absolutely be recommending!"
--M. K. Lobb, bestselling author of Seven Faceless Saints and The Dark In Her Veins

"A sharp, wildly entertaining blend of workplace romance and supernatural adventure. Smart, funny, and full of heart, Viall's debut features leads with irresistible chemistry and a compelling slow-burn tension. An utterly addictive read from the very first page."
--Letizia Lorini, USA Today bestselling author of A Killer Kind of Romance

"A morbidly whimsical paranormal romance with bite, (Mostly) Human Resources is for everyone who watched X-Files and Supernatural and desperately wanted to be a part of that world. Better devour it before it devours you!"

"(Mostly) Human Resources is fun, exciting, and full of heart, blending the paranormal intrigue of the X-Files with the very relatable workplace stresses, and a pair of loveable characters who readers will adore."
--Rose Black, author of Til Death Do Us Bard

"Charming, swooney, and a little bit spooky, (Mostly) Human Resources is an absolute delight. Viall blends a stunning array of elements, from folklore and fantasy to creepy and cozy, and packages it in a rivals to lovers romance that leaves you kicking your feet and begging the characters to kiss. Viall's incredibly fresh debut is full of fun and fright, and leaves you dying for the rest of the series."
