Book Synopsis

An antelope and a baboon--an ill-matched pair, wouldn't you say? Well, you're in for a surprise: these two go really well together!

Join author Pavla Hanáčková and illustrator Linh Dao on a journey through the animal kingdom's most unexpected friendships. In this 36-page nonfiction picture book, young readers discover how antelopes and baboons watch out for each other, how a zebra has a great understanding with a little bird, how a clownfish lives happily inside a stinging anemone, and how a shark travels surrounded by an entourage of cleaner fish. Even plants get in on the action! Each spread introduces a new unlikely pair in a clear, engaging way that makes nature-learning fun.

Packed with charming illustrations and fascinating real-world science, Odd Couples in Nature turns animal facts into a laugh-out-loud reading experience. Designed for curious readers ages 6 to 9, this book builds science vocabulary and a love of the natural world while celebrating the surprising power of cooperation!

  • Collaborative Nature: Teaches young readers about the different kinds of beneficial relationships animals and plants form--mutualism, cooperation, and symbiosis.
  • Builds Science & Nature Vocabulary: Introduces real scientific terms and concepts in an approachable, age-appropriate way.
  • A World of Unlikely Friendships: Explores 15 real animal and plant pairings, including zebras and oxpeckers, pandas and bacteria, ants and aphids, hippos and fish, coyotes and American badgers, and more.
  • Answers Kids' Curious Questions: Tackles the "why" behind strange animal behavior, turning natural curiosity into real answers.
  • Perfect for Animal and Nature Lovers: Young readers ages 6 to 9 will discover how creatures across land, sea, and even underground help each other survive.
