Book Synopsis

"Satin Sidewalks" is a deeply personal collection of poetry and visual art by a Brooklyn-born Dominican woman writing from the intersection of desire, identity, and lived experience. Raised by an immigrant single mother in New York City, Deyanira Jitsomwung reflects on the emotional landscapes of growing up between cultures, expectations, and shifting versions of self. These poems move through themes of womanhood, sensuality, memory, and survival, capturing both the tenderness and intensity of becoming who you are in a city that never stops moving.
At its core, this collection explores the duality of softness and strength. It examines what it means to exist fully in one's body while navigating love, longing, heartbreak, power, and transformation. Brooklyn is ever-present throughout, not just as a setting, but as a living force that shapes language, identity, and emotional rhythm. Interwoven with original artwork created by Deyanira, "Satin Sidewalks" expands beyond traditional poetry into a blended artistic experience. Each piece contributes to a larger narrative of self-discovery, where emotion, imagery, and memory collide. This collection speaks to those who have felt deeply, loved intensely, and learned to find power in their vulnerability. It is a meditation on becoming, on reclaiming voice, and on the beauty that emerges from contradiction. "Satin Sidewalks" is Deyanira Jitsomwung's first published collection.

About the Author

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of a Dominican immigrant and single mother, Deyanira writes from the intersection of survival, softness, and self-invention. Her work lives in the tension between what the world demands of women and what women quietly reduce to surrender. A certified yoga instructor, accountant by training, and lifelong observer of human behavior, she moves between structure and instinct, logic, and emotion--bringing a rare duality into her creative voice. After two decades working in accounting and real estate across New York City, she began turning inward, translating the precision of numbers and systems into something more fluid--poetry. Her writing is intimate, raw, and unflinching. It explores womanhood, desire, identity, and the inherited weight of being a daughter of immigrants in a city that both builds and breaks you. Brooklyn is not just a backdrop in her work--it is a living force. A teacher. A wound. A mirror.
In "Satin Sidewalks," her debut collection, she blends poetry and visual art to trace the evolution of a woman coming into herself. Through sensuality and reflection, grit and vulnerability, she documents the emotional landscapes of growing up between cultures, expectations, and versions of self. Each poem is a fragment of becoming, of learning how to exist fully in a body, a city, and a story that was never simple. Her voice is shaped by contrast: discipline and desire, softness and survival, silence and expression. Whether on a yoga mat, guiding breath and embodiment, or on a page confronting memory and longing, she is interested in one thing above all--truth in its most honest form.
Currently, Deyanira is based in the New York area, continuing to write, create, and expand her work at the intersection of poetry, visual storytelling, and live experience. "Satin Sidewalks" is her first published collection.
