Q: Why do they contain all these synthetic colors despite the OEHHA report from 2021?
A: Hello! Any colorants that are added to a food product must be listed in the ingredient statement. What may cause confusion is the use of the terms "artificial" and "natural" to describe colorants. Any product to which a colorant is added to enhance visual appearance is considered "artificially colored" even if the colorant used is a natural ingredient. There are two general types of colors used in food products: certified colors and non-certified colors. Certified colors are synthetic materials and must be listed in the ingredient statement according to their certified number (Yellow No. 5 - Tartrazine, Blue No. 1, etc). Yellow #5 and Yellow #6 are derived from non-animal sources. Non-certified colors include many natural materials coming from plant sources; they must be listed by their common name (e.g., fruit juice, paprika, etc) or by the term "artificial color". The following are some natural colorants commonly used: ANNATO - vegetable dye from pulp surrounding seeds of tropical annatto tree. APOCAROTENAL - yellow colorant; form of beta carotene, a Vitamin A precursor; found in all plants and many animal tissues. BEET JUICE - juice from beets. CAROTENE - also called beta carotene; colorant and form of Vitamin A; found in all plants and many animal tissues. GRAPE SKIN EXTRACT - extract from grape skin. OLEORESIN PAPRIKA - Seasoning and colorant which is an oil extraction from common spice, paprika. RIBOFLAVIN - vitamin B2. I hope this information helps!
