Toddler-K--Lloyd-Jones's book doesn't waste any time on an intro: 'By a stream is a good place for a little tree to be.' Jago, in a pastoral scene, shows a balding older white man with a fringe of gray hair with a shovel, a dark brown-skinned woman with brown hair in a bun, using a cane, and two slightly lighter brown-skinned children with black hair busily panting a birch with its telltale black-and-white bark. The next spread takes onlookers of the left page to a beach where a Black girl with a black bob and a blond boy with tan skin swing from a palm tree leaning over the water, while on the right is a stand of bamboo and three more children, with just as varying skin tones and hairstyles. The landscapes change, but the tree or 'trees' live by water, deciduous or baobab, winter, spring, summer, or fall, and now we come to Psalm 1, where readers are the tree, and the water is God. In this book, simple text and illustrations are used to convey the message of Psalm number one to children. This Psalm likens the strength and love that we get from God to the nourishment a tree gets when well-watered. Besides satisfying thirst, the water brings health and beauty. Because of the water, there will be lots of fruit. The tree stays green year-round, even in the winter. Growth, happiness, and strength also come from this never-ending stream. To communicate, simply, these big ideas to little ones, a small number of words, with lots of vibrant, eye-catching illustrations are used. Jago, the illustrator, has created a whimsical variety of trees throughout the volume. This book will best be understood with the help of an older teen or adult to read and explain the text. Children will enjoy how sturdy this board book feels. It also has a nice, cushy cover that little ones will love to hold and touch. The ideas in this four-star book will be appreciated by children four to seven-years-old. Thank you, Zonderkidz, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own.
