About the Book

"When a popular college student is murdered, her international roommate, Anneliese, becomes a prime suspect. But law professor Margeaux Robbins is convinced the killer can't be the quiet, lonely German in her class. Chase Crandall is a burned-out defense attorney ready to extricate himself from the grind of criminal law. After the loss of a client to tragedy, he's ready for an in-house corporate position. When Chase is assigned to Anneliese's case, Margeaux is horrified. She doesn't want him to provide legal counsel, not after what happened to his past client. And not with the evidence implicating Anneliese. The lawyer and professor reluctantly pair up to find the killer and prove Anneliese's innocence. Will they be able to untangle the mystery and navigate their growing interest in one another before Margeaux's student and Chase's client is imprisoned?"--

Book Synopsis

"A brilliant novel that fans of the genre won't want to miss!"
--Tosca Lee, New York Times best-selling author of The Line Between

When a popular college student is murdered, her international roommate, Anneliese, becomes a prime suspect. But law professor Margeaux Robbins doesn't believe that the quiet, lonely German girl in her class is the killer.

Chase Crandall is a burned-out defense attorney ready to extricate himself from the grind of criminal law. After he loses a client to tragedy, he's ready for an in-house corporate position.

When Chase is assigned to Anneliese's case, Margeaux is horrified. She doesn't want him to provide legal counsel--not after what happened to his past client. And not with the evidence incriminating Anneliese.

Despite their mutual misgivings, the lawyer and professor pair up to find the killer and prove Anneliese's innocence. Will they be able to untangle the mystery--and navigate their growing interest in one another--before the wrong person is charged with murder?

"Gripping and brimming with chemistry, this novel will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page."
--Lynette Eason, best-selling and award-winning author of the Lake City Heroes series

Thrilling Legal Suspense

4.5 Stars Well, I decided I’d just take a peek at the first page of this book, and next thing I know I’m halfway through with no intention of putting it down! I was hooked from the first page, and the tension and suspense kept me flipping pages until I was done. Chase and Margeaux are both compelling characters that drive the story forward. Chase’s protective instincts and the way he cares for his clients made him an instantly likable character and one I wanted to know more about. Margeaux’s desire to not only teach her students, but care for them well and connect with them redeemed what could have been an annoying know-it-all character with book knowledge in a world where experience is king. Combined with the mystery and the intrigue of pursuing justice from the “other” side of the table to what’s normal, this book is one suspense lovers don’t want to miss! *I removed a half star because the story ends a bit abruptly and leaves several threads that were woven in throughout the story dangling. Nothing major, but enough to be frustrating. The relationship development for a romantic suspense was also too light for me, making this feel more like a legal thriller with a subplot of romance, creating a feeling of being cheated upon finishing it.

Captivating Legal Thriller!

I've enjoyed Cara Putman's previous books, but this is now my favorite! The Accused is the page-turning tale of a young German exchange student accused of murdering her roommate. It has twists, turns, and non-ending suspense, but I was especially fascinated by the courtroom scenes. I felt like I was there, front and center, watching the legal teams spin their magic, as I held my breath, chewed my nails, and tried to weigh the evidence! What would the jury decide? Was Anneliese guilty, or was she just an innocent fall-guy? This captivating story has multi-faceted characters, a well-developed plot, and an enlightened view of our country's legal system. Would you feel safe entrusting your freedom to a law professor and a lawyer unsure of his career path? I was fully engaged in this exciting legal thriller from author and lawyer Cara Putman! I received a copy from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review.

Fantastic Legal Thriller!

Who doesn’t love a good legal thriller? I know, me too! Cara Putnam’s latest book, The Accused ponders what it would be like to be accused of a crime in another country and have to navigate the legal and court system. This book inspires all the emotions - shock, confusion, frustration, despair, and eventually relief. Along the way we get glimpses into the American law enforcement and legal systems, in addition to a little romance on the side. There were a couple of details in the book that felt like they got dropped or forgotten, but I won’t give any spoilers here. They just preyed at the corners of my mind while I read, saying, “But what about this?” I assume this was a plot choice on Cara’s part, and my preoccupation with them probably says something about my personality. Overall, I thought this was a great read and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre. I was given an advance copy to read, but the opinions here are completely mine.

This story kept me up and had me neglecting my chores! It was a page turner for me. A young exchange student from Germany (Anneliese) is accused of murdering one of her college roommates. Is this a wrong place wrong timing ...this is the question that Anneliese's friend and professor (Margeaux) is determined to figure out. Anneliese tells her side about the killing leaving Margeaux and Chase (court appointed attorney) to join together to find the real killer. This book is the second in a series but can be read as a stand-alone. You will not be disappointed!

The Accused is a compelling beginning to the Secrets to Keep series with overworked defense attorney Chase Crandall and law professor Margeaux Robbins teaming up to prove that German international college student Anneliese Richter is innocent of killing her roommate. This captivating story sparked my interest early on and kept me reading well into the night! The expertly plotted storyline flows at a fitting pace with surprising twists and revelations that kept me guessing at the outcome. I love courtroom drama and Cara Putman sure knows how to make it exciting and suspenseful! Complex characters propel the story forward to a well-rounded conclusion ensnaring my emotions along the way. I enjoyed the way Margeaux and Chase's personal relationship, as well as their professional one, evolves. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Great Legal Thriller!

What an awesome legal thriller/drama! I was drawn right into this story from the first chapter. The characters are multifaceted with real issues and pasts revealed a little at a time in the novel. I loved Chase and Margeaux and found myself thoroughly invested in their story and their journey to prove the innocence of the accused. I did not want to put this book down to go to work or to sleep. Cara Putman’s knowledge of the court system and legal process shows in her writing. The scenes are realistic as is the dialogue. She keeps the story moving and the twists and turns coming. The suspense is top-notch and kept me turning pages in search of justice for the victim and the accused. Although this is the second book in the Secrets to Keep series, it can be read as I stand alone. I have not yet read the first book and I had no problem understanding and enjoying this one. I intend to read the first one now that I have read this one.

Who killed the roommate?

This legal thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat, believing the innocence of the defendant and then wondering if you are wrong. Anneliese is an international student at Monroe College learning about America. Unfortunately, one of her roommates is murdered and the blame is laid at her feet. Margeaux Robbins, a law professor at the college, along with Chase Crandall, an attorney that is tired of it all, find themselves working together to prove Anneliese’s innocence. With plenty of courtroom detail and learning about the search for proof of guilt, this well written legal mystery will make you wonder how many people miss out on adequate representation when confronted with charges, guilty or innocent. An early copy to Secret to Keep #1 was received through Kregel Publications and NetGalley. These impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.
