Most unicorn DIY kits are intended for children ages 6 and up; some kits specify 8+.

Common materials include plastic, paper, polystyrene (foam), ceramic, cotton, and glass; some kits also include wooden or PVC components for bases or displays.

Many unicorn craft kits require no batteries. When batteries are needed, the most common requirement is AA cells—examples include kits listing 2 AA or 3 AA batteries (not included).

Common decorating tools include paintbrushes and paints, diamond-painting styluses with gem trays and wax squares, and in some kits airbrush tools or washable markers for decorating plush items.

Some do: for example, water-bottle kits often include a detachable straw for easy cleaning, and certain airbrush plush kits let kids wash off old designs and create new ones for reuse.
