They are generally printed on paper or cardstock. Some listings also note a laminated surface or finish for added durability.

Under the scratch coating you’ll typically find labeled countries, states, and capitals, plus map details such as cities, hill shading, flags, and state outlines.

Scratch-off posters are shipped rolled inside a protective tube to prevent bending and preserve print quality during delivery.

The scratch coating is described as easy to remove and scratches off smoothly. The surface is commonly laminated and glossy, which helps resist damage during normal use.

World scratch maps can cover up to 197 countries and often display country flags and major destinations under the scratch layer. Exact country and destination coverage varies by edition.

The included United States scratch map is provided in a standard 11 x 17–inch format.

The scratch layer typically uses a laminated, glossy coating. At least one design specifically mentions a metallic (gold) scratch-off coating.
