Vertical file cabinets are commonly made from metal/steel, wood-composite or engineered wood, and plastic. Metal or steel is typical for taller, freestanding cabinets, while smaller file boxes may use plastic or engineered wood.

Many vertical cabinets include adjustable hanging rails or bars that accommodate Letter, Legal and A4 folders. Smaller file boxes commonly support letter and legal folder sizes.

Several tall metal cabinets include an integrated lock that secures all drawers with a single key (often supplied with two keys). Some models pair the lock with an anti-tilt interlocking mechanism for added security and safety.

Many vertical cabinets feature an anti-tilt or anti-tilt interlocking mechanism that prevents more than one drawer from opening at a time, reducing the risk of tipping when the cabinet is loaded.
