This began an unlikely friendship that deepened as the soldiers prepared to leave on a dangerous mission to fight in the Second World War. As the soldiers trained, Whitey became their constant companion, leading their military parades and eventually becoming an official member of the troop--complete with a regimental number, pay, and the title "Trooper Whitey"!
More than just a mascot, Whitey brought joy and comfort to the soldiers, who were about to leave their families and homes to fight overseas. In turn, Whitey was unfailingly loyal to the men and did everything he could to make them happy and boost their morale. When the time came for the men to head overseas, they could not imagine leaving without their four-legged companion and fellow soldier and hatched a plan to bring him along.
