Sending Messages:
You can send voice messages from one HomePod or HomePod mini to others in your home.
This can also be done from your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and even CarPlay.
Receiving Messages:
Messages are played on all designated HomePod speakers in your home.

Replying:

The HomePod mini has a feature called Sound Recognition that allows it to act as a listener for your existing, non-smart safety alarms. Nice sound but ...
The HomePod mini was easy to set up. The sound is quite pleasant and soothing but cannot play as loud as the JBL Charge6 speaker if you want to throw a party. The bass from the later is also deeper and tighter. The JBL Charge6 can play using its battery while the HomePod mini needs to be connected to an outlet via the USB cable that comes with it, thus the latter is not portable.

Connectivity Issues
I purchased a white HomePod mini, I’m pretty text savvy and I know how to work Apple products. When it came to setting my product up with the home app, it kept giving me error messages and telling me to try again. The only thing I was able to do was play music via my phone through the speaker. I could not get it to work with my matter enabled lights. I went with a goggle home display, same price, with a screen.

don't purchase unless you have apple music account
We had an alexa prior to purchasing this. So easy. Just tell it what you want to listen to, radio station, ect... but the mini wants to immediately connect to apple music. You can use this mini with your iphone but you have to operate the mini through your iphone to access you spotify, iheart radio, ect. We have a SONOS so we can do the same thing with this. Was looking for simple. This is very hands on vs. just asking it to find info, radio station, a song, a recipe....the weather....

The sound quality on this is like a clowder of bats screeching in the night. You should be afraid, very afraid of just how awful it sounds. I mean, even an Alexa Echo does a better job and I hate Jeff Bezos. If you want an Apple Smart Home Device, spend the extra dolla dolla bills, y’all, and get the full size Home Pod. You will only find heartache and pain if you buy the Mini. And no one wants that.

So confusing.
Let me start by saying, we are Apple people. We have iPhones, Apple TV's, iPads, MacBooks, etc. This HomePod mini went back immediately. I couldn't figure out how to control it with my phone. There's no app, no adjusting the settings, nothing. I originally bought it with the hope of using it as a sound machine at night, and having the bonus of a speaker for any use. Definitely was not ideal for it.
