Horrific scenes of violence frozen in space
Dead Silence is a truly frightening tale that takes place in space. S.A. Barnes has crafted a story that had elements of claustrophobia that made me have to take a second to shake off. Their writing managed to heighten my anxiety, which makes for a really thrilling read. Dead Silence mostly takes place on an abandoned vessel or Ghost Ship. It is a luxury ship that was thought to have been lost 20 years ago. Claire and her crew come across it after receiving an outdated emergency beacon call. They take a vote and decide to board it to find something that can prove that they are taking ownership of it with the purpose of getting paid for its return or salvage. Once they board, they come across horrific scenes of violence seemingly frozen in place due to the environmental system being turned off. During their ghost ship exploration, the crew begins to devolve into paranoia and violence. I will be the first to admit that I am not a cosmic horror reader, but after reading its description, it seemed to be more focused on a single haunted vessel than an exploration of space. Once the crew start feeling the effects of whatever is haunting the ship, the terror really begins. What I loved most about it is there are one or two instances where Barnes’ descriptions of heights or just space, in general, are enough to frighten the reader. That, coupled with the frozen scenes of death that surround the crew give off enough horror to keep the reader captivated throughout. Dead Silence is a scary and thrilling read that twists and turns until its conclusion. I cannot recommend it enough.
