Great for those with attention issues!
Personally, I don’t typically pick up books that aren’t fantasy or romance, but I thought, “Hey, why not?” Finding this workbook was wonderful! I already have a general idea of what career path I want to take, but having all the info available about *how* to choose was a blessing. Not to mention the fact that the interactive portion kept me engaged with the book, and helped keep the procrastination monkey in me from putting it on the shelf, and never picking it back up. I would say, if you’ve got someone who’s still floating (career wise) in your life, why not pick up a copy?

A Guide for Parents and Those Seeking Their Own Path
As a parent and stepparent to 5 young adults, I often worry and hope that they find a path in life that will sustain them mentally and emotionally, as well as financially. My spouse and I try to support them on their journey but have found it difficult to articulate the paths that are available. When I learned about Don’t Settle, I researched what I could about it and decided that I needed to pre-order the book as it might be a tool that we could use to help our children find their paths. Before I was able to place my pre-order, I saw a post on Facebook in a group born out of the archery community at Sherwood Forest Faire; the author was looking for people to read and review the book. I may have been the first to reply. My muggle job requires a lot of reading of technical documents, so I typically don’t do much reading outside of work. However, this book was one that I felt I needed to read. I made the time for it and was able to read through it in 3 to 4 hours. It felt fitting that I finished the book while on the grounds of a renaissance festival in its first year, where so many people are trying to find their path within that new world. I found this book to be an easy, enjoyable read providing many helpful resources including activities and recommended books. The anecdotes are entertaining and often quite illustrative as examples of the paths. Some traits of those who enjoy certain paths are mentioned, while also addressing pros and cons for each path so that the reader will understand what they are getting into. Overall, I feel it is a good starting point for those seeking their path through life, whether it is the beginning of their journey, or at a fork in the road.

Very insightful
I have read a lot of self help and motivational books over the years. Some of them can be daunting to get through, some of them feel like they have an agenda. Not this book. This book was insightful and helpful, with exercises that really make you step back and think. It was also concise, interweaving the author's own personal journey to where he is now almost not as evidence that "this works" but as "this is how I applied it for myself." He does not preach one path is better than another, just the successes and pitfalls you may experience with the path you select. I will reference again and give it to my friends and family to ingest because I feel this is a very valuable way to level expectations with wants and needs in life.

A Must Read for All Stages of Careers
I don’t typically enjoy career motivation books, but Don't Settle: A Pick-Your-Path Guide to Intentional Work surprised me in the best way possible. Instead of feeling like just another read, it felt more like having a really productive conversation. The authors provide spaces for guided exercises throughout, which are incredibly useful for personal reflection. I personally chose to keep a notebook nearby so I could jot down extra thoughts and ideas inspired by the book, and I found that really helped deepen my engagement. One of the things I appreciate most is that I know I’ll return to this book again after achieving some of my goals. It’s the kind of resource that will grow with you, providing clarity and direction whenever you're ready to set new milestones. Another unexpected bonus is that my high school-aged daughter is reading it now, too! She’s never been particularly enthusiastic about planning for college or her future career, but getting advice from King George himself between sword fights really sparked her interest. I’ve never seen her this interested in thinking about her future. I also plan on gifting a copy to my mentor soon—it’s that impactful. Whether you have 20 years of experience in your field or are just starting out, Don't Settle offers something valuable. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

Perfect for students!
As a retired high school teacher, I’ve spent decades helping young people discover their passions and plan for their futures, so I’m no stranger to the challenge of guiding others toward meaningful work. George Appling’s “Don’t Settle: A Pick-Your-Path Guide to Intentional Work” is an excellent resource for anyone facing that crossroads, whether they’re just starting out in their career or rethinking their path. What I love about Appling’s approach is the way he builds on the familiar concept of Ikigai, but goes further with his five-part framework: Passion, Independence, Money, Experiment, and Balanced. He presents these paths in a way that feels relevant and accessible, encouraging readers to find a career that’s aligned with their values and what brings them joy. As a teacher, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful it can be when students are empowered to follow their own path, and Appling’s book reinforces that philosophy beautifully. His "Take Action Challenges" are practical, giving readers the tools to actively reflect on their goals and start making progress right away. I also appreciate the attention he gives to important life skills—such as learning from mentors, expressing gratitude, and overcoming roadblocks. Appling even highlights the benefits of lifelong learning and staying physically active, which are lessons I’ve always tried to impart to my own students. What really stands out is the tone of the book. Appling writes in such an engaging, down-to-earth way, with humor and a clear passion for helping others live more intentionally. He makes his readers feel like they’re on a personal journey with him, encouraging them to ask the right questions and pursue the life that’s best for them. With insightful exercises, free online resources, and a rich reading list, “Don’t Settle” is a fantastic guide for young adults and anyone looking for a change. As someone who spent my career helping young people navigate their future, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book. It’s not just a roadmap—it’s an invitation to live authentically and fully, whatever path you choose.

An excellent tool to help you find a fulfilling life
While this is clearly written for older teens and 20 somethings there is a lot anyone can take away from this book to figure out your priorities and how to bring more joy to your life. I think it is great that it isn't here to tell you how to live your best life, it is here to help you figure out what your best life is and how to live it. I will be purchasing multiple additional copies for some of my children and grandchildren.

Great book
Great book!!!! I highly recommend it especially if you feel lost in life and don't know what to do next. This book is so very well written it didn't take me very long to get through it. I always have plans, maybe a few to many at once, I'm working on. George's book has really given me great perspective on how to channel my energy and focus on how to accomplish my goals. His book really challenges you to think about what is most important to you and how to obtain it. Do the exercises in the book they really do help. I will definitely be giving this book to my son who just graduated from high school to help him get a head start on life that I wish I would have had at his age.
