Book Synopsis

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Better Than the Movies Lynn Painter comes a heartfelt and banter-filled rom-com about childhood sweethearts whose icy reunion in their hockey-loving hometown unexpectedly thaws when they fake a romantic relationship.

Growing up, Dani couldn't help but follow around the adorable son of her mom's best friend. Funny, kind of nerdy, and a little soft, Alec was always down to hang with Dani when they were little. From play dates on the playground to sneaking into movie theaters, Dani and Alec were inseparable. Until Dani moved away. Alec promised they'd stay in touch--except, they didn't.

Flash forward and Dani is back in Minnesota for her senior year, she and her mom living with her grandfather. Dealing with the fallout of her parents' devastating divorce, Dani wouldn't mind a nerd-out with the cozy and comforting Alec (and maybe a chance to confront him on his MIA status for all these years). But teenage Alec is nothing like the kid Dani remembers. He's a hockey star in a town where hockey players are worshiped as gods. Dani's place as his shadow has been taken up by drooling female fans...and he loves it.

Dani is resolved to ice out her former best friend until an unlikely series of events brings them together--and forces them to fake being a couple. Once forced together, the former childhood sweethearts begin to reconnect, unearth complicated family secrets, and face their true feelings towards each other...including the real reason Alec has been pushing Dani away all these years.

fake skating

4.5 stars i loved this!!! no one does ya romance like lynn painter and this may have been my favorite so far. (honestly can't decide between this and betting on you). painter just does it right. i always adore her mmes, and alec was no exception. and just like with her other stories, the banter/chemistry between the mes (loved alec and dani!!) always feels so genuine. especially this one. it's funny, heartfelt, cute, and romantic all at the same time. i loved this story, and im biased towards childhood f2l what can i say. such a good read :)

A fun YA book!!

Lynn always has a way with words & this read was no different. I absolutely adored the FMC & MMC so much, they definitely were portrayed as I’d expect them to be just with the synopsis & it was so fun reading a YA hockey romance! It felt like this book could’ve been longer & I would’ve liked it just as much! The FMC Dani has anxiety & panic attacks which I think was represented really well - it felt real! The history of the characters & how they’re connected were portrayed so well. Nothing felt over the top, weird, or too much! It was really sweet, & the fake dating??! Count me in! The banter between Alec & Dani was so fun & I truly enjoyed it, although it was a bit corny at times. I do however wish the fake dating went on a bit longer & had the yearning go on along with that & have more perspective of Alec! Also, in the beginning there was a reason why the 2 MC’s fell apart (miscommunication comes in) & I felt like it was brought up slightly but near the end it didn’t fully solve the miscommunication. Also, with high school comes rivalries & I wanted a bit more of that shown!! It would’ve been more fun to see that in the hockey aspect of it. Other than that it was a fun, quick read! A lot of the parts I found sooo sweet which makes it all the better.
