Political intrigue, magic, star-crossed lovers being kept apart, and the atrocities of war. Five stars!
This is one of those books where I was upset that it was almost over that I put off the last 20 minutes of the story for three days because I was so depressed the ride was ending. Amazing story of star-crossed lovers who end up on opposite sides of a war that rips their land apart. The story bounces back and forth between when they met and where they are now with consistent political drama, challenged loyalties and life-altering choices. The story of a war-torn city with magical and a cruel history was beautifully written and I felt fully immersed in the story and getting to the bottom of the mysteries the author set up from the beginning. I love that the reader goes in blindly and slowly gets information and history revealed in snippets while flashing back, instead of a chronological info dump at the beginning. It was not an easy "quick skim" kind of read. You have to be fully focused on the story because there are a lot of nuanced moments and intertwined storylines but I absolutely loved the ride and can't wait for the story to continue in the next book.
