Solar isn’t highly effective, hard to navigate
I have been using the solar edge in Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. Ive found that even when off, Im unable to gain much charge on the device through the solar. It’s not worth the investment from that standpoint. In addition when I am climbing tough mountain bike terrain, the garmin “pauses” tracking and I have to take my hand off the handlebar to press the play button twice to get it to resume. Sometimes I must do this 5 times in a row to get it to quit. Lastly, I use this device for navigation, but when I am approaching a climb (and unfortunately usually a fork in the trail) the screen switches to show me Im about to climb. I dont find that as helpful as navigation and it usually means I need to stop at the bottom of a climb loaing all momentum to manually switch back to the navigation screen. This device could be right for some folks, but Im not a big fan for the 1k price tag.

Mediocre
Screen background (red) doesn’t off enough contrast relative to the black on 1030+. Audio alert volume for radar, turns, etc., are not as loud as 1030+, and therefore not as noticeable while riding

Perfect Companion for Ultra-Distance Cycling
After using the Garmin Edge 1040 Solar for long endurance rides and (SFR 600k) brevets, I can honestly say the battery life and navigation are game changers. The solar charging, multi-band GPS accuracy, and training features make it one of the best cycling computers I’ve used for ultra-distance riding. It’s especially reassuring not having to constantly worry about battery life during long days and overnight events.

There’s a Golf app on it: that’s how stupid.
My Wahoo Element died 5 days before a 40 day bikepacking trip. I find it hard to express just what a waste of money this computer is: won’t load routes consistently from Ride w GPS, is not intuitive AT ALL, won’t rename routes, acter every ride tells me how much solar power helped… Seriously. The Climb feature is ridiculous. Standard setting was calling out pimples. Had to go into settings and change. God help me, this is probably the biggest waste of money in my life.Okay, maybe seccond biggest. And for what it’s worth, I run withwma Forerunner 55 and recommend to everyone looking for a running watch

Wish I’d Converted Sooner
I’ve been using another popular brand for years now and switched before a big bikepacking trip and have no regrets. The capabilities and accuracy of the 1040 solar are great. The solar feature really helped out during a 36 hour race in the mountains with a good deal of shade. Setting up the various templates takes a little work but it’s not that bad and it’s worth it. I am a huge fan and I’m happy I converted

Battery life is the headline
Battery life and price were my priority with this purchase. I didn’t want to shell out more money for the 1050 with much worse battery even though it has a better screen. I’m upgrading from an 830, so in all ways the experience with the 1040 is improved. Nothing will feel unfamiliar if you’re upgrading from an older model. The reviews about the solar screen being a little harder to see aren’t wrong. It’s mostly fine, but don’t expect it to perform like an iPhone screen. In situations where the sun is behind you and your body casts shadow on the computer it can be a little harder to see. Otherwise I think it’s absolutely fine. I haven’t run the battery dead, but even in winter conditions it looks like I should get at least 40 hrs of ride time on a charge. That is outstanding IMO. I just did a whole week of riding in Arizona and didn’t even charge the thing.

Feature rich, display lacking
Wonderful unit to use if only it was brighter. The solar makes it dimm we r than the 1030+ and the solar charging isn't worth anything. Very disappointing unit compared with the 1050 and even the older units.

Pleased that it has a larger screen over the smaller model I first had. Pleased that it has the Sonor feature.

Great device but one problem
I bought this device thinking the battery would last me atleast 20 hours. But sadly after a 6 hour ride the battery from 100% dropped to 20%. Maybe I got a defective unit.

I unfortunately didn't install a screen protector and scratched the screen. Also the navigation can be at times glitchy. But besides these issues great product very polished and excellent battery life. I would recommend this for anyone that can afford it.

Solar - Bikepacking
I bought my Edge 1040 Solar because I bikepack long distances. I just rode a 3 day ride and I was very happy I did not have to charge my Garmin every night. I still carried my charger just in case but the fact that the battery last much longer made me less worried of running out of power. I use a course with all the turn points and do not have it on power saver mode. I am happy with the technology and the new added screens Garmin has added. I love it

I know it is pricey, but man is this an essential computer for bike touring. I used this on a 7 day ride with minimal sunlight and I only plugged it in once. The touch screen is responsive and reliable, and screen is huge, and customizing the views is a great feature. Syncs up immediately with my Garmin lights and the app. Big, big fan.

Probably defective
I bought the 1040 Solar after great experiences with the 1030 and 1030 plus. Out of the box the battery was down to 29 percent after 9 hours. I spoke to a Garmin tech who helped me revise the settings. On the next ride it was worse. Down below 50 percent after 4 hours. I am returning it as defective. I hope the replacement is better.

much better than expected
I bought this to replace an aging 1030. It was getting buggy and I do long rides of 10-12 hours and the battery would sometimes crap out. This is so much faster and the battery life is insane with the sun in Utah. It also has far more new features than expected. IT was a great upgrade and would recommend to anyone considering a change from a 1030 or older.
