About the Book

In this engaging and clever middle-grade nonfiction, readers can unearth how scientists are using ancient legends about monsters and gods to solve modern-day problems.

Book Synopsis

Fire-breathing monsters. Runaway goddesses. Giant sea serpents. Myths and legends about all of these can hide important clues to solving some of science's biggest mysteries. Explore theses ancient secrets of the world in GeoMyths by Charlotte E. Hunter, a vividly illustrated middle-grade nonfiction that's perfect for fans of Percy Jackson and the I Survived series.

Can a story about a sea monster save someone from a tsunami?

What can the legend of a lost city tell us about the dangers of climate change?

Can your pet predict a deadly earthquake?

Many people would dismiss mythology and folklore as superstition or fantasy, tall tales that have no scientific value. But ancient stories from all over the world contain real clues to solving scientific mysteries that are still being studied hundreds or even thousands of years later.

Ready to become a geological detective? Let's start decoding some ancient mysteries.

About the Author

Charlotte E. Hunter writes in northern Virginia, surrounded by stacks of science and history books. She loves science that not many people know about and history that even fewer people know about. She has hiked around Loch Ness twice hoping for a glimpse of the monster, with no luck. She was an active-duty officer in the U.S. Navy and lived and traveled all over the world. When she writes, she wears comfortable old clothes and scruffy slippers, and when fall comes, she writes outside in the chill air so she can see the brilliant color of leaves.

Vivienne To is an illustrator and visual development artist. For the last 15+ years, she has worked across feature films, television, commercials and children's publishing. She was born in Melbourne, grew up in Sydney and lives in New Zealand. When she isn't drawing, she can be found knitting on the couch, watching cute dogs at the local park or lost in the pages of a good book.
