Book Synopsis
A couple who broke up months ago pretend to still be together for their annual weeklong vacation with their best friends in this glittering and wise new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry. Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college--they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now--for reasons they're still not discussing--they don't. They broke up five months ago. And still haven't told their best friends. Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group's yearly getaway for the last decade. Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blissful week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine, and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most. Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they'll all have together in this place. They can't stand to break their friends' hearts, and so they'll play their parts. Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show. It's a flawless plan (if you look at it from a great distance and through a pair of sunscreen-smeared sunglasses). After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one week...in front of those who know you best?About the Author

Yes mellow start, it’s true it was not an immediate whirlwind of a read but i didn’t mind taking my time with it. 1/3 through the book and it started clicking for me, and the pacing of the beginning made sense after that. keeping their breakup a secret has a lot to do with Har’s character then it does with Wyn. The friends facing the uncomfortable fact that life changes, friendship can seem to fall through the cracks and fear of losing the moments that make you happy.

The flow, the flashbacks, it was hard to get going took me 2 weeks and then I just starting reading. I just feel like the organization of the book was choppy, and I think she could have developed it more. She had something there. Cover is great, catch, but needed a little more. I did like Book Lovers and Beach Read,..will not read the Funny Story now.
Witty and Heartwarming

This book is brilliant! I love how Emily Henry captures the evolution of friendship as the characters grow up and move apart. It’s both witty and heartwarming, and I’d recommend it to anyone!

It's a story about 5 friends who've known each other since before college. They meet up in Maine for a vacation, but unbeknownst to Harriet and Wyn's friends, they broke up 3 months ago and are no longer engaged. The chapters go back and forth with past and present, but it isn't overdone. You get to know the characters and how they came to be friends, but also how Harriet and Wyn fell in love originally. There's a little bit of spice later in the book. I read it twice in 3 weeks. I loved it. Recommend!

I couldn’t even finish the book, so maybe I shouldn’t give my two cents. But. I’m a huge reader and I’m going to. It seemed like the book wasn’t written well, a lot of “filler” and random sentences that just didn’t seem necessary. I got 12 chapters in and decided it was not for me.

100 pages in and I have officially given up on this book. I don’t give up on books, ever, yet here I am planning to donate this one to my local LFL next week. I love Emily’s other books but this one hits so below the mark, it’s incredibly disappointing. The writing is hard to follow and loses focus, the characters aren’t as lovable as intended and the plot is just lacking. There is nothing to grab the reader and her voice as a writer is lost in this book. Hoping her book coming out later this summer will redeem her in my mind because Beach Read is one of my favorite rom reads to date!
Was not impressed!

It builds up very slowly, but it’s worth it to me to really understand why things happened the way they happened. I think if you can get past the first half of the book you will enjoy it.
Slow and boring.

Honestly this book was a little boring. At the end I was just glad I was done with it. Felt like she wrote things that were irrelevant just to make it long,

Conflicted..

I'm still a little conflicted on this one... This book is so beautifully written, & the character descriptions made me feel like I was right there at the cottage in their friend group! I loved the back & forth between the present & past chapters, giving us insight into Harriet & Wyn's friendship & relationship. But I could not get over the reasoning behind why they broke up!!!! Like, he threw 8 years away in 4 minutes just because of that!! My dude! C'mon! I felt myself getting a little bored by the middle, & then hooked me when it really picked up 3/4 of the way. I won't spoil it-but I'm like- really?? All that back & forth between the two of them-just because of THAT. I debated between giving 3 or 4 stars for that reason. I gave it almost 4 stars because the ending made me tear up, & got my heart racing a bit. The ending made the rest worth it, & Harriet finally taking a stand for what she wants & deserves- I'm all for a good boss babe finding herself! And I love the closeness of their cute little friend group, & being there for eachother when their family wasn't. It was a feel good book about love, friendship, & second chances that I didn't absolutely fall in love with, but didn't hate either.

I adore this book. Emily Henry writes witty and raw characters with basic but realistic plots. I really connected with the main character of Happy Place and it was an easy book to read in a short amount of time. Great vacation book. I recommend all of EH’s novels.
