Oliver Jeffers, arguably the most influential creator of picture books today, offers a rare personal look inside his own hopes and wishes for his child--and in doing so gifts children and parents everywhere with a gently sweet and humorous missive about our world and those who call it home.

Insightfully sweet, with a gentle humor and poignancy, here is Oliver Jeffers' user's guide to life on Earth. He created it specially for his son, yet with a universality that embraces all children and their parents. Be it a complex view of our planet's terrain (bumpy, sharp, wet), a deep look at our place in space (it's big), or a guide to all of humanity (don't be fooled, we are all people), Oliver's signature wit and humor combine with a value system of kindness and tolerance to create a must-have book for parents.

This book is absolutely beautiful (and a teeny bit sad). I love the way it presents a kind of “welcome to planet earth! Here’s the instruction manual” in a very positive and heartwarming way. I will just say that I bought this book too early for my child and she destroyed it by ripping some of the pages out. Especially the pages that fold open differently from the rest. I would highly recommend this book, but not for a younger child, maybe (even though that’s what the concept might imply).

The sweetest book talking written from the perspective of a new father telling his baby about life on earth. It’s beautifully illustrated and written. I buy it as a gift for every new parent.

I think it is a very dark book for a young child. It is was too sophisticated for a young mind to comprehend. “More often, though, they move quickly, so use your time well. It will be gone before you know it.” There were a lot of little things like this that creeped me out that I wouldn’t want to read to my niece or nephew. I originally picked it up because the illustrations were cute but once I read it I’ll be getting rid of it. Some of these pictures also creeped me out. (I’ll insert) “when I’m not around you can ask someone else” also thought that was weird, making it acceptable for little kids to think talking to strangers is okay. wouldn’t recommend….sorry.
