Q: Does this train stay on the tracks well?

A: Yes, I had to add the small reinforcement pieces to where the trains connect for them to keep connected. It took a few tries to get individual trains on the track. Once they are on they stay on the track. No problem.

Q: Do you have to operate the train using Bluetooth (phone, tablet, etc) or does it come with a remote control for us old school remote control folks?

A: This set does not come with a remote. It does have a switch that allows it to run automatically (conventionally) or can be chosen to run via Bluetooth on your phone or tablet.

Sad and Disappointing!
Honestly where to begin Lionel it just stopped working. This was supposed to be my kids big Santa gift and it stopped working. My son has autism and loves trains. He loves Lionel trains. This was his first. How disappointing and you can't return to get another. How sad this company has fallen!

Do not buy!!!
Lionel should be ashamed. Do not buy this product. Where do I even begin with a list of complaints? We were trying to replace our Lionel G gauge Polar Express train we loved that had the engine finally wear out. But Lionel had the genius idea to come up with a "ready to play line" that isn't compatible with any g gauge trains or accessories you may have. I was unimpressed from the get go with the lack of quality. It looks like a complete piece of crap compared to our old train. It was missing 2 pieces of curved track (I've since read other reviews of people with the same issue) so we couldn't even run it. They sent the 2 pieces after talking to the snobby lady that answered their customer service line about a week later. I installed the batteries and nothing works. I took the battery pack out and put it back in and it worked. Then when I went to put it on the track it shut off again. Picked it up and it came back on. Obviously has a short in the wiring of this brand new toy. Looking for remote but surprise! It doesn't come with one. So unless your 8 year old has their own smart phone they won't be able to run the train. And the app is quirky at best , hence the 2.8 star rating. The train details very easily ( the old train NEVER derailed. After running for about 3 minutes all the sound stopped working. Keep in mind this was a brand new toy that cost $120!!! I can't say enough bad things about this train. I've been a Lionel fan and model RR enthusiast for over 50 years and this is a gigantic disappointment. I'm going to return it to the store I purchased. The whole experience just made me sad.

Looks cool but terrible design.
I have other ready to play trains and they’re just getting more expensive while unfortunately getting worse in design. They include way less track in this version than the other models. Also, they don’t include a remove any more and instead force you to use their garbage app which barely works. Lastly, the train pieces are fine but the actual ENGINE is so poorly designed it cannot stay on the track whatsoever. No matter how good the track is laid it randomly comes off.

Disappointing
Surprised my son with this but it ended up being a big disappointment. For the price, this was not a good quality. All plastic. It doesn't stay on the track. It's cute but if you want it to function at all, look elsewhere.

I received 22 curved pieces instead of 24, so cannot built a track in any shape. Have to order new pieces.
