Q: Can leftover potting mix be saved and stored for months at a time?

submitted by chrisp - 7 years ago
  • A: I wouldn’t recommend it unless you can seal the bag very well. My bag was taped closed but somehow flies/ moths got in and were able to breed. I kept the bag rolled up and taped. It was also stored in an indoor utility closet. Soil definitely wasn’t dry but was infested in a months time.

submitted byShiberu - 7 years ago
  • A: I have done this and it does tend to dry out.

submitted byKBD - 7 years ago
  • A: I twist & seal with a tie or ribber band or get a big plastic storage container to use just for this.

submitted bylafcom - 5 years ago
  • A: Yes. Our Miracle grow Premium Potting Mix can be stored indefinitely. Simply tape or roll top of potting soil bags shut. If you have additional questions or want more information, please contact us. The following link will take you to our contact page: http://tinyurl.com/noc5mcg

  • A: I keep a bag of potting soil until it is used up and that may take up to a year. There is nothing the matter with it, just add some water and the proper fertilizer and everything will be fine.

Q: Can this potting soil be used with orchids?

submitted by Nicole - 7 years ago
  • A: I would use the Miracle Gro Potting mix because it is what I would have on hand but as of now I do not own an orchid. I would try to Google up some professional help or stop by a nursery for answers.

submitted byTexas Lady - 7 years ago
  • A: No. The potting media used for orchids are chosen to imitate “life on a rainforest tree.” Most common types of orchid potting mix consist primarily of small pieces of fir bark that's main function is to stabilize the plant and promote root growth. We would recommend one of our two Miracle-Gro Orchid Potting Mix products, one that is a course blend and one a fine blend. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any additional help to you. Our phone number is 877-220-3089 and we ask that you please refer to your review when calling.

Q: Is this potting soil good for use in the Vegepod?

submitted by newhomeowner - 8 months ago
  • A: Miracle-Gro Potting Mix is specially formulated for container plants. It is ideal for both indoor and outdoor container plants and for use in a topsy turvy planter. Potting mix soil can be used in a raised bed but it would be best to mix it with garden soil 50/50 and not use alone.

What is going on with the soil you are selling? It was full of hay and large wood chunks. I have purchased 1000’s of bags of this soil in the past. I’ve been gardening for 40 years. I have also been a walking advertisement for your product. This latest bag is so disappointing. I’m not sure I can recommend this anymore if you’re lowering your standards.

Hi Ericksondra, we're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. It is common to see small pieces of bark and twigs, these are intentional components of our soil, however, you should not find large pieces of wood or bark. Composted forest products provide high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction. The coarser material allows for air to reach the roots. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. Limitations apply. Soil gnat explosion!

I've bought Miracle Grow potting soil for years and I have always had great success with it. Last fall I bought a bag that was called "Potting mix". When I opened the bag it was full of bugs that flew out!!! I returned it and got a different bag. Other than the mix looked different from what I was used too - much more wood pieces and not so much soil like, but I didn't see any bugs. I replanted all of my plants last fall and now all winter I've been dealing with soil gnats flying around our house. These were plants from my parents funeral and I'm hoping I can save them. Sticky traps have been catching lots of them, but they still keep coming. Ugh!!! I think once the weather warms up, I'll need to get them all outside and get rid of all the soil and start fresh, but don't think I can Miracle Grow potting soil anymore! :(

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix with Fertilizer and appreciate your feedback. It is possible for insects to enter the bag during shipping and storage. Insects may also come in with soil of transplanted plant or enter through cracks, crevices, open windows or doors simply looking for suitable environment. Some possible ways to control fungus gnats include: allowing the soil to dry out as much as possible between watering will help control the larvae or applying at least 1/2 inch of horticultural sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. Limitations apply. I bought a large bag of the Miracle Gro Potting mix and it poisoned my plants over wintering in the house. I tried it in one plant. Leaves turned yellow then brown while plant died from the top down. I thought maybe the plant had a fungus so I tried it with another plant..same experience. Now I'm afraid to use it anywhere in the yard, as it obviously contains something deadly.

Problems with mold and fungus gnats!

Within the last three months I pursued the task of repotting my houseplants. I had two bags of Miracle Gro Potting Mix that I had purchased within the last year. Very shortly after transplanting them, I noticed small black flies (or gnats) and mold in the ones I had transplanted. So far I haven't lost any plants but I put sticky traps in the pots and am amazed at how many are getting caught! Am very disappointed with the current product... never used to be a problem but evidently people all over the country are complaining about this.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with MiracleGro Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. We recommend letting the soil dry out between each watering as overwatering can make the problem worse. Leaving the soil to dry can help kill the larvae. Additionally, you may apply at least 1/2 inch of sand on top of the soil of established potted container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. Sand should be left on the container for several weeks until the problem is solved. Do not apply sand to seedlings or if trying to start plants from seeds. This can damage or hinder seedling development. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. I am not happy. I didn’t know what gnats were when I used the potting soil. I continue to use it, not knowing that they were gonna take over my plants and kill them slowly one by one. I’m so saddened by this just like so many others!!!! I am losing all my house plants that I’ve had for years that I’ve been taking care of, they were my babies and I nurtured them just to have them ruined by a poor quality control of a product! Shame on miracle grow!!!

I used to enjoy repotting my plants. I'd buy a yellow bag or two of Miracle Grow potting mix and get my hands dirty. It was great. I neither knew of nor had I ever seen a fungus gnat. Neither had my beloved indoor plants, the oldest one arriving back in 2001 as a gift. I wish that were still the case. It all seemed so easy back then. Now, I delay repotting as long as I can. I hate it. I hate the new fungus gnats I'll have to deal with every time I repot my plants or even top off their pot with a new layer of soil. It used to be a relaxing afternoon, now it stresses me out. Please don't reply about how they don't affect plants or humans. They affect humans even if they don't attack them. And they're not just a nuisance. Daylight savings time is a day or two of nuisance. This is weeks of infestation that requires all kinds of extra work and discomfort in one's own home. And please don't respond saying the fungus gnats get in through the air holes (i.e., not your fault) when those air holes have always been there, and yet there were no fungus gnats years ago in your potting soil. You ruined your own quality potting soil, and my love of indoor gardening. I LOVED your product. Now I hate it.

I tested my brand new home with mold test and have mold in the air. Tested my blood, and it now has a very very high amount of bacteria. On top of that, I had gnats. Looked at the soil through a microscope, and you can see the bacteria in the soil. Is this just mulch soil from the dump?

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix with Fertilizer and appreciate your feedback. Fungus gnats do not typically damage houseplants but they are a nuisance. The larvae look like tiny white grubs or maggots and feed on the fungus that naturally grows in potting soil. The adults are small and dark and may enter the air holes in the bag to lay eggs while the soil is waiting for sale. 1. Let the soil dry out between each watering. Dry soil can help kill the larvae. Most people tend to overwater their plants and this can make the problem worse. 2. Yellow sticky traps are another alternative. Place them close to the location of the fungus gnats. 3. Apply at least 1/2 inch of sand on top of the soil of established potted container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. Sand should be left on the container for several weeks until the problem is solved. Do not apply sand to seedlings or if trying to start plants from seeds. This can damage or hinder seedling development. 4. Insects will not disappear overnight. It may take several weeks but the consumer should begin to see a reduction in insect numbers. All houseplants in the home must be treated. 5. Severely infested plants may need to be repotted however the larvae may remain in the root ball when the plant is moved to a new pot. Remember the larvae themselves rarely damage plants but eat the fungus that grows in all unsterilized potting soil. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back.
