Q: Can leftover potting mix be saved and stored for months at a time?

submitted by chrisp - 8 years ago
  • A: I wouldn’t recommend it unless you can seal the bag very well. My bag was taped closed but somehow flies/ moths got in and were able to breed. I kept the bag rolled up and taped. It was also stored in an indoor utility closet. Soil definitely wasn’t dry but was infested in a months time.

submitted byShiberu - 7 years ago
  • A: Yes. Our Miracle grow Premium Potting Mix can be stored indefinitely. Simply tape or roll top of potting soil bags shut. If you have additional questions or want more information, please contact us. The following link will take you to our contact page: http://tinyurl.com/noc5mcg

  • A: I keep a bag of potting soil until it is used up and that may take up to a year. There is nothing the matter with it, just add some water and the proper fertilizer and everything will be fine.

submitted byTexas Lady - 8 years ago
  • A: I twist & seal with a tie or ribber band or get a big plastic storage container to use just for this.

  • A: I have done this and it does tend to dry out.

submitted bycarlacjake - 6 years ago
  • A: 1 cubic sq. foot = equals approximately 26 dry quarts (soil)

Q: Can this potting soil be used with orchids?

submitted by Nicole - 8 years ago
  • A: No. The potting media used for orchids are chosen to imitate “life on a rainforest tree.” Most common types of orchid potting mix consist primarily of small pieces of fir bark that's main function is to stabilize the plant and promote root growth. We would recommend one of our two Miracle-Gro Orchid Potting Mix products, one that is a course blend and one a fine blend. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any additional help to you. Our phone number is 877-220-3089 and we ask that you please refer to your review when calling.

  • A: I would use the Miracle Gro Potting mix because it is what I would have on hand but as of now I do not own an orchid. I would try to Google up some professional help or stop by a nursery for answers.

Q: Is this potting soil good for use in the Vegepod?

submitted by newhomeowner - 1 year ago
  • A: Miracle-Gro Potting Mix is specially formulated for container plants. It is ideal for both indoor and outdoor container plants and for use in a topsy turvy planter. Potting mix soil can be used in a raised bed but it would be best to mix it with garden soil 50/50 and not use alone.

This is the first year that I’ve been unhappy with this product! I used it when potting my peppers and flower boxes, as I have done for the past four years. This year I have tons of odd mushrooms growing in each pot. After they die out they leave behind a weird clump of. Anyone else with this problem?

The 5 new bags from this year are not. Not very happy. No not happy at all. Expensive ! I enjoy my summer flowers. But I’m frustrated this year.

This is the second season of finding seedlings growing in my pots which I’ve been able to identify as sunflowers. Yes I feed birds and have chippies but the growth is only in patio and hanging pots I’ve done with your dirt. I have store bought pots and they’re fine. Your product has definitely gone downhill. This will be my last purchase.

Past years the potting soil was much better quality. The promised grow 3x bigger plants are false. I had to give extra nutrients in order for them to thrive. What happened to the quality??
1 reply from Customer Care team - 1 month ago
We're sorry to read about your disappointment with the Miracle Gro Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. The small pieces of bark and twigs in our potting soil are intentional components. However, you shouldn't find large pieces of wood or bark. Most of our soils, especially our potting mixes and garden soils, are made from composted forest products. They contain very little, if any, actual soil. This is by design! Composted forest products offer several benefits: high organic content, reduced compaction, and improved aeration. The coarser material allows air to reach the roots of your plants, promoting better performance over time. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. Limitations apply. This is a perennial Hibiscus on it's 3rd season. I left it in the nursery soil originally. It almost died the first season. I kept it over the winter somehow and last summer it lived, but looked like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. Don't know why I kept it, but this spring I replanted it with Miracle grow soil. This little hibiscus that could, has transformed into a thriving, beautiful plant. Unbelievable.

I would like to begin by saying that I have purchased Miracle-gro products for decades. With that said, this year, I purchased a number of bags of Miracle-gro potting mix. What I have found was no soil in any of my bags. All that is in them is sticks, of varying sizes, bark, of varying sizes, peat moss, some perlite, and what appears to be some type of fir. Granted, I will gladly admit that there is benefit to these products. However, they should not comprise the entirety of a potting mix. There needs to be soil in some form or quantity. I did still have two bags from last year, which I did open. The difference was truly astonishing for what is supposed to be the same product.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. While large pieces of bark should be filtered out during processing small pieces of bark are added to our media to improve drainage and prevent the soil from compacting. 1 reply from Customer Care team - 1 month ago
We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle Gro Potting Soil and appreciate your feedback. While the gnats are annoying to deal with they will not harm your plants. They can enter the bags in shipping or while being stored at the retailer. We recommend adding a 1/2 inch layer of sand to the tops of the pots. This will not allow the gnats to burrow and will kill the larvae. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. I bought two new bags, have used only one. Two plants had to be re potted and my husband helped me take them outside, took them out of the pots, and I literally hosed off all the old potting soil and then put them in bigger pots with the new soil. I now have once again been infested with bugs from your potting soil! I have fought what I thought were fungus gnats from your soil for months and almost had them eradicated, but thought it was maybe due to storage of the bags at the store. Never again!!
1 reply from Customer Care team - 2 months ago
We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Potting Soil and appreciate your feedback. While we do not sterilize the soil it is composted to kill any harmful insects and microbes. Unfortunately, soils may become infested with insects while in storage or while they are waiting for sale. Below are some steps you can take: -Let the soil dry out more between each watering. Dry soil helps kill the larvae. Most people tend to over water their plants, and this can make the problem worse. It's especially important to drain the saucers of excess water. Anything left after an hour should be poured out. -Apply at least 1/2 inch of sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. Sand should be left on the container for several weeks until the problem is solved. -To catch the adults you can try putting a small bowl of cider vinegar with a drop of dishwashing liquid near the houseplants or use yellow sticky traps. -Insects will not disappear overnight. It may take several weeks but you should begin to see a reduction in insect numbers. All houseplants in the home should be treated. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee. If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied with the results after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. Limitations apply. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 888-295-6902 if we can further assist.
