It's not that the potting mix causes gnats directly — rather, it provides the kind of conditions (moisture + organic material) that gnats like if the mix is kept wet.
To prevent gnats, it's important to let the top layer of the soil dry out between waterings, use good drainage, and consider adding a top dressing like sand or diatomaceous earth, which makes it harder for gnats to breed. A: Hello! Our soils are made from processed forest products, coir, limestone, fertilizer, mycorrhizae, and moisture-balancing yucca. Depending on the soil bag, the organic fertilizers could have ingredients derived from milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, or soy.
Please read through each soil bag's exact ingredients in case you have any allergies to any of these ingredients. If very severe, we'd recommend being careful using our soils & talking to a doctor first.

Pure garbage!
I almost never write a target review but boy! This one deserves one. I bought 2 bags to repot some indoor plants. When I first opened the bag, I didn’t notice anything particularly unusual but just days after replanting, gnats everywhere! The soil had bugs and gnat larvae that then hatched and completely took over my plants - several plants. It was a nightmare. It’s been two months of trying to get rid of them. Sticky traps, mosquito bits soaked water, pumice layers. The population is going to slowly but it’s been an ordeal! Last week, I opened the second bag (factory sealed) for the first time. This time, gnats immediately flew out! Completely gnat infested soil that will completely take over and terrorize you for months while you try to get rid of them! Flying everywhere indoors! Zero stars.

Buggggssss!! Thrips Galore!!
I bought the bag, potted my plants, and stored the soil in my kitchen, rolled up and tossed in the corner. A few weeks had passed, and one day I needed to repot my plants. I opened the bag, and bugs crawled out. They were everywhere!!! They looked like thrips!!! Bugs in the bag… they started jumping . I threw the whole bag in the trash can.

Fungus gnat city
Used to love this soil until I used it about a month ago to repot my 7 year old monstera and we have had horrible problems with fungus gnats ever since. After trying multiple methods for getting rid of them I finally decided to just throw my monstera out (heartbreaking) and the soil was INFESTED with them. Absolutely disgusting. And now I’ve also found them in a christmas cactus that was nearby. This soil was definitely the culprit since I haven’t brought any new plants or soil into my house since then. Please don’t buy this soil unless you want a crazy gnat infestation in your home. Go to Pike’s instead if you’re able to.

This entire bag became infested with gnats. I had to get rid of a Monstera and Pothos that I used this soil on. So much time and money was spent getting those plants to the size they were. Lesson learned….stick to nurseries for supplies

Great Potting Soil
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love this potting soil! It came at a perfect time as I needed to put some flowers in my planters. It was so easy to use and spread so easily and looks wonderful in my pots. I have only had it in for maybe a month or so, so I can’t speak to the long-term, but so far I am really liking it. My flowers are still thriving. It seems to hold water and make sure it gets to my flowers. I have not noticed any weeds or insects on it so far. I love that this potting soil is organic and I can feel really good about using it!

Horrible, do not buy! Planted tomatoes and flowers using the potting soil and all plants died within a month. Very little soil, tons of gnats, and lots of wood chunks. Disgusting and NOT purchasing Back to Roots again.

My house is absolutely infested with fungus gnats. I didn’t even use it on my plants because it was CRAWLING with gnats as soon as I opened it. But they were all released into my house and are now colonizing my plants and drains. Costly and time consuming to eradicate them. Don’t waste your money on this product
