Q: I'm repotting a lot of houseplants, would the regular potting soil or houseplant potting soil be better. The regular comes in a larger bag but is it better to get the houseplant specific bag?

submitted by Katie - 1 year ago
  • A: I recommend the potting soil. I’m doing outside work too and thought I could sneak by with top soil. I did use the potting soil last year and preferred it for pots.

submitted byElizabeth - 1 year ago
  • A: Is this well draining soil?

submitted byHannah - 3 months ago
  • A: Hi Katie! We recommend using which soil would work for each specific plant since different plants have different needs. If you have any questions or would like further help deciding, please reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com.

Q: Hi. Is this soil good for strawberries and peppers?

submitted by Chy - 3 months ago
  • A: Hi Chy! Yes, our Organic All-Purpose Potting Mix is a good choice for both strawberries and peppers. It has a neutral pH, which works well for most plants, including these two. Strawberries generally prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–6.5), and peppers do well in a pH range of 6.0–7.0, so this mix provides a solid base. Just be sure to provide plenty of sunlight and consistent watering for best results!

DO NOT BUY!!!

So upset that I didn’t read the reviews on this!! This soil was infested with gnats, which we didn’t realize until we had put it in several of our houseplants.. they have since migrated to our other plants (about 20 in all) & we’ve tried everything to get rid of them! More than a month later, we’re still seeing gnats flying around!!! We are now having to replant every plant we own!! What a nightmare!!!! If I could give it negative stars, I would!!

Beware of fungus gnats

This potting mix came infested with fungus gnats. I used it to repot 1 plant, and I am now fighting to get rid of them in all my houseplants since they spread so quickly.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 7 days ago
Hi there! Thank you for reaching out. Fungus gnats can occasionally appear in any potting soil—they’re a common, naturally occurring insect and not harmful to humans or pets. That said, we understand how frustrating they can be in your plants! To help us look into this further, could you please send photos of the front and back of your bag to contact@backtotheroots.com? Once we see the details, we can assist with a replacement if needed. We’re here to help you get your plants thriving again! —The Back to the Roots Team

Great healthy soil, wonderful customer service!

I don't think I've ever posted a review here before, but I felt compelled to after reading all the negative reviews, and then myself receiving excellent customer service. I too, had fungus gnats in my soil and what I thought was white mold, so I reached out. Andrea at Back to the Roots got back to me so quickly (like within 15 minutes of my email!). Fungus gnats are attracted to damp, compost rich soil, so they're probably going to be in anything of good quality. They only lay their eggs in damp soil, so just let the soil dry out and they won't survive. What I thought was white mold was actually mycelial growth which is fantastic! It's super beneficial and great for your plants, and actually a sign of healthy soil. Andrea still cheerfully offered me a replacement, but I declined. For the sale price of $7.99 or even the regular price, this is a great deal for 25 cu. ft. of exccellent soil. I will never go back to miracle-gro again. Thank you!

Hi Nadia, thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience! We’re thrilled to hear that Andrea was able to help quickly and that your plants are thriving. You’re absolutely right — healthy, compost-rich soil can sometimes attract fungus gnats, and mycelial growth is a great sign of a living, vibrant soil ecosystem. We really appreciate your thoughtful review and are so happy to have you as part of the Back to the Roots community. 🌱💚

DO NOT BUY THIS POTTING SOIL

I rarely leave reviews, but I want to save others the terrible experience I've had with this potting soil. I opened the bag inside, because it's for my indoor plants. Literally thousands of gnats flew out of the bag. The soil appears to be moldy? Not totally sure. But I have spent weeks trying to get the gnats out of my house with sticky traps, and it feels hopeless. I am embarrassed by the number of gnats in house. DO NOT BUY THIS POTTING SOIL.

Hi Heather! Thank you for sharing your experience—we’re so sorry this happened and completely understand how frustrating it must be. What you’re describing sounds like fungus gnats, which are very common in potting soil. They thrive in moist environments and aren’t harmful to people, but we know they can be overwhelming indoors. We’d love to make this right. Could you please email photos of the soil itself and the front and back of the bag to contact@backtotheroots.com? Once we see the details, we’ll be happy to send a replacement or discuss the best solution for you. We appreciate your feedback and hope we can help turn this experience around.

Hi Matt! We’re so sorry to hear about your experience — we know how frustrating it can be when unexpected pests show up. Fungus gnats are actually a very common issue in all organic soils (not just ours), since living soils contain rich organic matter that gnats are naturally attracted to. The good news is they’re harmless to people and pets, and there are safe, natural ways to manage them. We’d love to make this right for you. If you could please email us photos of the front and back of your soil bag to contact@backtotheroots.com, our team will be happy to look into this further and send you a replacement. GNATS

I bought this months ago for my plants and it has led to months of battling gnats. This soil comes with them. Even sealed away in a container away from everything, gnats kept coming from the soil and living in it. I had done so many treatments before finally deciding to dispose of ALL of this soil, including what I had already used for my plants. This is not worth it at all.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 2 months ago
Hi Kii! Thank you for your feedback, and we're truly sorry to hear about your experience. We understand how frustrating fungus gnats can be, and we want to help clarify and support you through this. Fungus gnats are a common challenge that can occur with any soil—especially organic mixes—because they thrive in moist environments and are naturally attracted to the rich organic matter used in many potting blends. These pests can also be introduced through surrounding plants, containers, or even through open windows and reused tools. However, we take concerns like yours very seriously and want to make things right. To better understand your experience and investigate further, we’d appreciate it if you could email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with the following: Details about your plant care routine (e.g., watering frequency, drainage, indoor/outdoor placement) Photos of the front and back of the soil bag Photos of the affected plants and soil Whether you noticed the gnats before using the soil or only after Your input will help us continue improving and ensure the best quality possible for all our growers. We truly value your feedback and are here to support you.

Hi Cas! Thanks for sharing your experience — we’re really sorry to hear about the bugs you’ve noticed. What you’re describing sounds like fungus gnats, which are a common (but frustrating!) issue with any organic soil, especially when it's exposed to warmth or moisture for extended periods — like in a car. These little guys are harmless to people but can be annoying around plants. That said, we never want you to have a frustrating experience with our soil, and we’re always here to help. Could you reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com with more details, like where you purchased the soil and photos of the front and back of the bag? We’d love to look into it further and help make it right. Thanks again for your feedback — it helps us improve and support our community better. Warmly, The Back to the Roots Team

Killed my babies!

My husband picked up this soil for me to repot my plants, 6 of them. I have always used Miracle Gro but didn't want to hurt his feelings so I gave it a go. After 2 days, all of my babies were dying - leaves drooping and turning yellow. I re-potted again but with Miracle Gro. Literally only a couple hours later they were ALL looking better. This soil is awful! Texture is similar to mulch. When I pulled my babies out, the top soil in the pots was dry and crumbly but the bottom half was soaking and like mud. It was killing my babies. Do not buy!! Do not use!! Hurt your hubby's feelings if you have to.
