Q: I'm repotting a lot of houseplants, would the regular potting soil or houseplant potting soil be better. The regular comes in a larger bag but is it better to get the houseplant specific bag?

This soil killed all of my flowers... Finally I use miracle pro instead.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 4 days ago
Hi J! We’re really sorry to hear that your flowers didn’t thrive — we know how disappointing that can be. Our organic potting mix is crafted with natural, living ingredients and no synthetic chemicals, which can sometimes behave a bit differently than conventional soils like Miracle-Gro. Organic soils often require a slightly different care approach, especially when it comes to watering, feeding, and drainage. We’d love the opportunity to help troubleshoot and understand what might have gone wrong. When you have a moment, please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with a few photos of the soil and your plants, along with some details about your care routine (watering frequency, location, type of plants, etc.). Our team would be happy to dig into it with you and help find a solution! Thank you again for trying our soil — we’d love a chance to turn your experience around.

Infected with gnats

Tmxhepg - 6 days ago, Verified purchaser
I was looking for to buy premium potting mix instead of miracle grow. The potting soil arrived terribly infected with fungus gnats and started an infestation with my house plants. I didn’t even open the bag. After the bag been sitting indoor and unopened for a whole month, gnats are still flying out of there. What a nightmare.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 4 days ago
Hi there! We’re really sorry to hear about the fungus gnats and understand how frustrating that must be. Fungus gnats can sometimes be associated with organic soils because they contain natural, composted ingredients that occasionally attract these pests. However, they definitely shouldn’t be present in large numbers when the bag arrives or before it’s opened. To help us investigate, could you please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with clear photos of the full front and back of the bag? This will help our quality control team review the batch. We’d also be happy to send you a replacement to make this right. Thanks for giving our product a try — we appreciate the chance to help you have a better experience.

The soil contains fungus gnats. Now I’m battling an infestation. The soil is also very chunky, mostly wood chips. Do not buy.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 4 days ago
Hi Mike W! Thanks for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry to hear about the fungus gnats and understand how frustrating an infestation can be. Because our potting mix uses aged wood fines to improve aeration and drainage, you might notice some chunkier texture compared to other soils. This natural ingredient helps support long-term soil health by encouraging healthy root growth and preventing compaction. Fungus gnats can sometimes appear in organic soils since they’re made with natural materials, but they shouldn’t be present in large numbers when you first open the bag. To help us investigate, please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with: Clear photos of the soil Photos of the full front and back of the bag Details about your care routine Whether you noticed the gnats before or after using the soil We’re happy to troubleshoot with you and send a replacement if needed. Thanks again for giving our soil a try — we want to help make this right!

1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 4 days ago
Hi Jason48238! We’re sorry to hear about the ongoing issue with fungus gnats — we understand how frustrating this can be. Fungus gnats are a common challenge with organic potting mixes because they contain natural, composted ingredients that can sometimes attract these pests. However, they shouldn’t cause a prolonged infestation, and we want to help you get this resolved. When you have a moment, please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with clear photos of the front and back of your potting mix bag, along with details about your plant care routine (watering habits, light conditions, etc.). This information will help us troubleshoot and ensure quality control. We’d be happy to offer tips for managing gnats and send a replacement if needed. Fungus gnats I wish I’d never bought this soil
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 8 days ago
Hi Suzyq! We’re really sorry to hear about your experience—and totally understand how frustrating fungus gnats can be. Fungus gnats are a common issue with all indoor soils, especially organic ones, because they thrive in moist, nutrient-rich environments. The good news is that they don’t harm your plants, and there are safe, natural ways to control them—like letting the top layer of soil dry out between waterings or using sticky traps or neem oil. We’d love to look into this further to make sure everything about your bag was up to our standards. If you’re open to it, could you send us a photo of the front and back of the bag to contact@backtotheroots.com? That will help us investigate and support you more directly. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention—we’re here to help!

Awful experience, both bags I got ended up having fungal fly eggs and about 1-2 days after potting, my plants were INFESTED. One of my plants of 5 years is suffering due to the infestation, and I’m so bummed. I am having a really hard time treating the soil and getting rid of them because there are soooo many. Poor quality soil overall.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 18 days ago
Hi Gina, we’re so sorry to hear about your experience—that’s incredibly frustrating, especially when it impacts a plant you’ve cared for for years. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. Fungus gnats can sometimes appear in organic potting soils, as they’re naturally attracted to warm, moist environments and can hatch from dormant eggs that exist in many organic materials. While they don’t harm plants directly, they’re definitely a nuisance and can be difficult to manage once they’re active indoors. We’d love to take a closer look at what happened and help however we can. Could you please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with photos of the front and back of the soil bags? Our team can help identify the issue and offer some treatment tips—and of course, we’re happy to make this right. Thanks again for reaching out. We’re here to support you and your plants!

Horrible mix of 95% shredded hard wood, and sand. No soil, perlite, compost, hummus, peat moss, vermiculite or other beneficial inputs or components. Large chunks of wood the size of my hand were also prominent in the mix.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 1 month ago
Hello JcPlatt! Thank you for your feedback, and we’re really sorry to hear about your experience. Our soil is peat-free by design—we intentionally avoid using peat moss to help protect fragile peatland ecosystems. Instead, we focus on using renewable, organic materials that support healthy soil biology and sustainable gardening. That said, what you’re describing doesn’t sound right to us. We'd love to take a closer look—could you please send photos of the soil, along with clear shots of the front and back of the bag, to contact@backtotheroots.com? This is woody soil full of mushrooms. My plants are not thriving, in spite of having appropriate water and sunlight.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 1 month ago
Hello! Thank you for your feedback — and we're sorry to hear your plants aren't thriving. What you're seeing in the soil is likely mushrooms or their mycelium, which are a natural and beneficial part of organic soil. They help break down organic matter and actually support healthy plant growth. While they can look surprising, they're not harmful to your plants. That said, we definitely want to understand what's going on and help you get the best results. If you're willing, please reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com with photos of your plants, as well as some info on how you're caring for them (watering schedule, sunlight exposure, and any fertilizers used). Our team would love to support you further.

1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 2 months ago
Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience — we're really sorry to hear about the condition of the soil and the impact it may have had on your raspberries. That’s definitely not what we aim for. Our Organic Garden Soil is made from living, composted materials, so occasionally you might see natural microbial activity that looks like white fuzz or mold. While this is generally part of a healthy soil ecosystem, it shouldn’t be excessive or foul-smelling — and it certainly shouldn’t harm plants. We’d really appreciate the chance to look into this further. Could you please send us photos of the soil and the front and back of the bag to contact@backtotheroots.com? This will help our team investigate and offer the right support — and if something’s off, we’ll absolutely make it right. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention!

Hello! We're so sorry to hear about what you found in your soil — we completely understand your concern.
