Description

Back to the Roots Organic Indoor Potting Mix Specialty Blend is specially formulated for indoor potted plants. In addition to organic all-purpose plant food, this specialty blend contains perlite for aeration and drainage, coconut coir and yucca extract for moisture control, and dolomitic limestone to help adjust pH. Plus, it has one of nature's most powerful growing ingredients: root-boosting mycorrhizae. Since it's made without bark or compost, it's less prone to indoor gnats. Like all Back to the Roots garden products, this potting soil is peat-free, so it doesn't contribute to harmful greenhouse emissions like some other brands. Pair this soil mix with other Back to the Roots plant products, like seeds, potting soils, and plant foods, for a completely organic solution. The Back to the Roots Organic Indoor Potting Mix Specialty Blend is a great addition to your at-home gardening supplies!

Q: Is this a good potting soil for ZZ plants?

submitted by Luna - 4 months ago
  • A: Hi Luna! Yes! Our Organic Indoor Potting Mix can work well for ZZ plants. It’s lightweight, contains perlite for drainage, and holds enough moisture to support healthy growth. Just make sure your pot has drainage holes and allow the top 2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings to avoid overwatering, since ZZ plants prefer drier conditions. You can also mix in extra perlite if you want even faster drainage.

Q: Is this good for indoor snake plant ?

submitted by Debbie - 6 months ago
  • A: Hi Debbie! Yes, you can absolutely use our Organic Indoor Potting Mix for a snake plant! Snake plants do prefer well-draining soil, and while our coir-based mix retains some moisture, you can improve drainage by mixing in a bit of extra perlite or coarse sand. This helps prevent soggy soil and reduces the risk of root rot. If you have any questions or need more help, feel free to reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com—we’re always happy to help!

Q: Would this be good soil to plant a Japanese maple in?

submitted by GrandmaA - 7 months ago
  • A: Hello! Thanks for your question! The Back to the Roots Organic Indoor Potting Mix is specially formulated for indoor houseplants, so it's best suited for container-grown plants typically kept inside, like herbs, leafy greens, or decorative indoor plants. Japanese maples, on the other hand, generally thrive in outdoor environments and prefer a slightly acidic, well-draining soil with a loamy texture. While you could use this mix for a small Japanese maple in a container temporarily, especially indoors, it's not optimized for their long-term health and growth outdoors. If you have any other questions or need help choosing the right product, feel free to reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com — we’re happy to help!

Q: Hi there, would this be a good choice for Pothos roots. I’ve grown some in water for about a year.

submitted by Liliana - 8 months ago
  • A: HI Liliana! Yes, our Organic Indoor Potting Mix would be a great choice for your Pothos! Since it’s made of coconut coir and perlite, it’s light, well-draining, and holds just enough moisture — perfect for transitioning Pothos that have been grown in water. The mix will help the roots adjust from water to soil without getting too compacted or staying too soggy, which are common problems when moving water-grown plants into regular soil. Please feel free to reach out to contact@backtotheroots.com with questions or concerns. Our team is here to help!

Live bugs and fungus, oh my!

This potting soil is not worth your time or money. I purchased two bags - one contained live, flying gnats/bugs that was immediately discarded; the other bag I should have just chucked in the trash too because although it looked fine, it has since produced MUSHROOMS in the plants I potted with my students for my classroom… 😩😳🫠
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 4 days ago
Hi ChelsHerr! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience — especially knowing this was for a classroom setting. We completely understand how frustrating and surprising this must have been. Fungus gnats are unfortunately common in all potting soils (organic and conventional alike). They’re attracted to moisture and organic matter, and while annoying, they’re harmless to people and plants. That said, we know that doesn’t make them any less unwelcome — particularly in a classroom — and we’re sorry you encountered them. As for the mushrooms, we know they can be alarming, but they’re actually a natural sign of healthy, biologically active soil. Mushrooms come from beneficial fungi that help break down organic matter and support plant roots. They don’t harm plants and are very common in nutrient-rich soils, especially when watered regularly. That said, your experience matters to us. If you’re open to it, please email photos of the soil itself, the front and back of the bag, and your receipt to contact@backtotheroots.com. Our team will be more than happy to help with a replacement or refund and make this right. We truly appreciate you giving us a try and hope we can turn this experience around.

Good as far as I can see.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I added the Back to the Roots potting soil to my cactus plant. It was very easy to get out of the bag. It was a consistent size which wasn't like other potting soil. It didn't stink which I liked. I really don't know the acidity of the soil. I look forward to using it more in the springtime when I get new indoor plants

    Lightweight and easy potting soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used the Back to the Roots indoor potting soil for a few of my houseplants and overall it did the job. The soil felt light and airy, which I liked because it didn’t hold too much water. My plants adjusted well after repotting and didn’t show any signs of stress. I also appreciate that it’s organic and meant specifically for indoor plants. It’s a solid option if you want something simple and easy to use without overthinking it.

balanced indoor potting mix that drains efficientl

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Back to the Roots Indoor Mix has a light, fluffy texture that’s easy to work with and doesn’t feel heavy or compacted. It drains well, preventing excess water buildup, while still holding enough moisture so I didn’t have to water too frequently. There’s a mild, natural soil aroma with no harsh or chemical smell. I also appreciated that it didn’t clump together, making repotting and mixing smooth and mess free.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great potting mix! Very soft and dense and was perfect for repotting my many house plants. It came in sturdy packaging that is easy to add a clip to if you don’t end up using it all. My plants seem to be taking well to it so far. Glad I gave it a try since they needed a nutrients boost and hadn’t been repotted in quite some time.

Back to Roots organic indoor potting mix

Gnats everywhere from this potting mix. I had to spend an additional $45 bucks to get rid of the gnat infestation it caused. Bought Zevo bug traps, Terro mosquito bits to kill larvae, and hanging Raid bug strips. I never had an issue with Miracle Gro but the store was out of stock. If I could give a minus in rating it would be -5

Hi there! We’re very sorry to hear about the frustration this caused. Fungus gnats can sometimes be present in any soil, not just ours, and unfortunately they can appear even in well-stored, high-quality products. Purchased in March and just grabbed the bag to use and found MUSHROOMS GROWING OUT OF IT!!! Gross.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 4 months ago
Hi Melissa! Thank you for sharing your experience with us — we completely understand how surprising it must have been to see mushrooms pop up in your potting mix! We’d love to share a little context: mushrooms are actually a natural sign of healthy, living soil. Since our Indoor Potting Mix includes beneficial mycorrhizae (tiny fungi that support strong root growth), sometimes mushroom spores — which are naturally present in many soils — can sprout when conditions are just right. They’re harmless to your plants and a sign that the soil is full of life, but we understand that it can feel a bit unexpected! To help us look into this further, could you please send us: - A photo of the soil showing the mushrooms - A full photo of the front and back of the bag You can email those to us at contact@backtotheroots.com. Once we receive them, we’ll be happy to review and, if needed, send you a replacement bag so you feel confident using your mix. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and giving us the chance to make it right! With gratitude, The Back to the Roots Team 🌱

Looks like I got sheds from a dog.

If I could give it 0 stars I would. It looks like a street dog was shaved and I was given its hair in a bag and sold as “organic potting soil”. HORRIBLE experience with this dirt and for the price I expected more. Do not recommend.
