Q: Is this a good soil for money tree plants?

submitted by Jenknat - 4 years ago
  • A: Yes, this is an excellent soil mix for a money tree, the sand, perlite, and peat moss mix helps to drain excess water which can cause root rot. You still want to be careful not to overwater your money tree but this type of soil mix is optimal for your plant.

Q: How many 11lb bags to fill a large pot (22in across by 20in deep)?

submitted by Steve - 5 years ago
  • A: About 11 or 12 should do it. Here's the math: Volume of the pot = pi(r)^2 -> 3.14(11)^2 = 7602 cubic inches. One dry quart= 67.2 cubic inches (found this info with a google search) so 7602/67.2 = 113 dry quart capacity for your pot. Since each 11 pound bag is 8 dry quarts: 113/8 =13 and change. Since your pot probably isn't a perfect cylinder and you probably don't want it full to the brim, we round down by a bag or two.

Fungus gnats for me too..not much more to say than that
1 reply from Miracle-Gro Consumer Services team - 3 months ago
We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Cactus, Palm & Citrus Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. These insects do not harm humans and do little plant damage (they primarily feed on the fungus found naturally in soil). Possible ways to control fungus gnats include: Allowing the soil to dry out as much as possible between watering will help control the larvae. Applying at least 1/2 inch of horticultural sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants. Larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. Horticultural sand should be left on the container for several weeks, until the problem is solved. Sand does not have to be removed, but if consumer wishes to remove it, dispose of it by recycling in a garden, landscape or lawn area. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 877-220-3089 if we can further assist.

Use this if you want a fungus gnat party in your house and flying in your face. Killed two of my plants and still trying to get rid of them everywhere months later. Spent more on eliminating the fungus gnats than I did all my houseplants. Believe the other reviews below. Do not buy.

Infested With Gnats

Michybelle - 5 months ago
I repotted multiple plants using this soil. After a few days I noticed gnats all over the plants. I placed some glue boards in them to catch as many as I can. If you touch the soil, they come flying out of the dirt. The traps now have a total of about 100 gnats in them after only a couple of days. This was not an issue before using this soil and every plant that I used this soil in is now heavily infested.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Cactus Palm & Citrus Potting Mix and appreciate your feedback. Insects could not survive the composting and packing process. However, it is possible for them to enter the bag during shipping and storage. Insects may also come in with the soil of transplanted plants or enter through cracks, crevices, open windows or doors simply looking for a suitable environment. The small flying insects are likely fungus gnats. These insects do not harm humans and do little plant damage (they primarily feed on the fungus found naturally in soil), but can be a nuisance. A possible way to control fungus gnats includes allowing the soil to dry out as much as possible between watering, which will help control the larvae. Also, you can try applying at least 1/2 inch of horticultural sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants; the larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die. Grows mold and infested with bugs
1 reply from Miracle-Gro Consumer Services team - 8 months ago
We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Miracle-Gro Cactus Palm Citrus Potting Soil and appreciate your feedback. Fungal spores are a natural part of soils. Under the correct conditions, spores can develop into fungus or mold. Our growing media products are not sterilized and may contain microorganisms such as fungus. In fact, fungus/mold has been scientifically proven to improve the growth of plants which is why we do not sterilize the soil. The fungus/mold only becomes a problem if there is an overgrowth. Overgrowth occurs when the soil/mulch is too wet. For soil that has not been used, allow it to dry out on some newspaper outside before using. For soil that has already been used, allow the plants to dry out a bit between watering's. This will not harm the plants. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please reach out to us at 877-220-3089 if we can further assist.

Kelsey - 10 months ago, Verified purchaser
It seems MG changed the composition for this mix. Previously, it balanced soil saturation and drainage, which made it perfect for succulents and citrus. Now, it holds water like a sponge, and stays too moist for too long. Worse yet, the bag I recently purchased reeked of mildew, so intensely it made my apartment smell. I contacted MG about these issues, and the rep tried to reassure me they were 'normal'. But I returned the remainder to Target for a refund.

Excellent substitute for plants that require standard potting soil. However, it will rot cacti and succulents because it retains too much moisture. It nearly killed my echeveria with root rot. I use this for my beloved 'regular' houseplants instead of using standard potting soil because of it's great draining qualities and also because it retains just the right amount of moisture without borderline waterlogging roots like standard potting soil. My peace lilies, neanthe bella palm, philodendron, lucky bamboo, wandering Jew, Christmas cactus, and Bird of Paradise are all thriving in this soil.

Fungus Gnats a la Temple of Doom

MCS - 1 year ago
I purchased the larger size (47.45L) from Target twice. Both times, my newly repotted plants erupted into swarms of fungus gnats (shame on me for thinking the first time was a one-off). I went to Miracle Gro’s site & guess what the top review of this product complains about: fungus gnat investigation!! Miracle Gro’s site wouldn’t let me leave a review so here I am. Disappointing. Photo taken after cleaning this window multiple times and moving the pot/plant outside, so this is nothing.

Used this on my first foray into testing for a green thumb, a Parlor Palm. No issues so far but the palm hasn’t grown 24 inches in two weeks like I had hoped either 😉🤣. I’ll give this stuff the benefit of the doubt though and give it an extra star.

Full of fungus gnats

I split my 30 year old snake plant and used this soil exclusively. I’ve had nonstop fungus gnats for 6 months to the point that I’m sure this is not actually soil, but just a bag of gnat larvae. I’ve tried all the tricks on the internet, mosquito dunks, hydrogen peroxide, sticky traps, drying out the soil, bottom watering. Now I’m going to have to try and repot it in the middle of winter.
