When our soils dry out, they become naturally water-repellent due to the peat moss and organic materials that are an important part of the soil mixture. We recommend slowly adding small amounts of water to the soil and thoroughly stir the mix, working the water in with your hands like bread dough. Wearing garden gloves and or using a garden tool work the soil and water together thoroughly until moistened. The white you see may be mold, neither fungi nor molds in our soil that breaks down dead organic matter harm growing plants. While it may be unattractive, it does not pose a risk to plants. These insects do not harm humans and do little plant damage (they primarily feed on the fungus found naturally in soil). Allow the soil to dry out as much as possible between watering will help control the larvae. Apply at least 1/2 inch of horticultural sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants.
