What an enchanting historical romance brimming with side-splitting humor, treasure-hunting mystery, unforgettable characters, tender romance, beautiful faith lessons, and breath-taking scenery! This has to be the funniest book that Roseanna M White has penned; I have not laughed this much while reading a historical fiction in a long time. Sheridan is so incredibly funny yet completely oblivious to his quirky charm. But Sheridan is more than just humorously odd and clumsy mannerisms and speech; his considerate thoughtfulness toward all people - from his beloved sisters to strangers - and his innocent sweetness make him quite the memorable hero. Beth’s loyal love toward family and friends is well-balanced by her free-spirited desire for adventure. Their relationship is a combination of enemies-to-lovers and one-sided love and it’s so much fun! Ainsley, Sheridan’s valet, and Senara, daughter of Beth’s housekeeper, provide the second romance in the story. They’re both steady calming influences in the major characters’ lives and their subplot is achingly tender and redemptive. I hope to see more of them in the next book. Magical folk lore, heady treasure hunt, evil men causing mischief, heart-stopping romance, and tight bonds of family all in an adventure of a lifetime? You don’t want to miss this book! It is difficult to select a favorite characteristic of To Treasure an Heiress. It might be how the author gives voice to her characters and develops the plot by growing the characters, or it might be the lure of a story that includes a hunt for pirate treasure. The way White includes conflict, but eases the tension with light-hearted comedy is another endearing trait, as is the way she weaves into the story the theme of the importance of family, the one you are born into as well as the ones you are invited into. The traits that make this book great, were also true for the first book in White's The Secrets of the Isles series, The Nature of a Lady. Reading that first book prior to this second book in the series isn't necessary, but will increase the pleasure of reading To Treasure an Heiress. I could not wait to read this book! Pirate Treasure, evil villains, crazy family, and of course romance, what’s not to love? I first met the main characters in The Nature of a Lady and I was dying to get to spend more time with them. Talk about a unique group! If you have yet to read the first book in this series don’t worry, you will still be able to follow along, and I’m sure you’ll fall in love with the characters just as I did. White had my attention from the first page and I didn’t want to stop reading. She took me by surprise with many unexpected twists and turns. I enjoyed playing treasure hunter right along with them, and had fun trying to piece together the clues. I loved watching Elizabeth and Sheridan’s interactions. I actually laughed out loud on a few occasions. This story was a wonderful adventure, and I can’t wait to see where their quests take me next.
