A: Hi Heather, the compost caddy is specifically designed to work with "liner rim" cans, which have a rim that secures the caddy’s magnetic dock. Unfortunately, the 46L dual step model is not one of the liner rim cans, which is why the compost caddy hook doesn’t fit as expected.
If you're looking for a solution, we can suggest checking if a wall mount for the compost caddy would work for you (since it doesn’t rely on the liner rim design). Otherwise, if you'd prefer the caddy to fit directly on your can, you might need to look for a compatible liner rim model.

What a useful item!
As usual with Simplehuman, this is engineered with precision: the magnetized lid that easily stays open, the convenient bin, the solid way it attaches to my trash bin. Had I realized what an improvement this would be over my countertop container, I would have bought this sooner. Highly recommend.

Compost solution
This is a great compost bin for the kitchen. It attaches onto the trash can, even though I have an older model of Simple Human recycle/trash can. It won’t go on the side of mine, but it will hook right on the front. Works for me.

The claim that it seals tightly enough to keep out fruit flies is so inaccurate. There are visible gaps between the bin and the lid. Very disappointed.

Bought this compost caddy thinking it would be sleek and easy to use, but the “magnetic seal” does not actually seal. We’ve had it for a couple months now and it is constantly infested with flies.

As usual for Simplehuman, the quality is first class. The unit is more than adequate for the job and it is much cleaner and easier than using the plastic odd shaped free bin, which is very unhygienic.

This caddy is an asset to my kitchen and to composting. It's the perfect size, and I love having bags to keep the container clean. Clean-up after composting is minimal. As a senior, I like how low-maintenance the whole process is.

Product description says it keeps pests like fruit flies from being attracted. It does not. It is not airtight and mine has fruit flies swarming around it. It is very attractive, but the product description is not accurate.

Compost Cadfy
This Simple Human Compost Candy is one of the best purchases I have made. We have a septic tank, and I cannot put anything down our garbage disposal, so having this caddy is a life saver. I bought the caddy as an attachment to the step open trash bin, and they both have made my life so much easier in the kitchen. They are both so good looking, I have been updating our kitchen, and seriously streamline our trash collecting process. In addition, the compost candy has a removable bin within the caddy, simplifying the cleaning and sanitizing process. Thank you, Simple Human—another great find!!!

Pros and Cons
The new compost caddy is great BUT as it does not fit on my Simple Human Bin, I am having to use it free standing although this is working well for me. I like its solidity and size and easy-use lid. On the Cons side - the actual compost bags supplied with it are so thin and flimsy that they tear with the least pressure in fact, it is almost impossible to get the bag to fit over the green insert caddy without it tearing badly on one corner. This means that the caddy is not fully lined to the top all round and is going to be pretty wasteful as one cannot fill the caddy to the almost-top before discarding. I recognise that they are "Compost" bags and will be, by their very nature, "thin" but these are truly very, very fragile and only just fit for purpose, especially when food waste is on the damp side!
