A Few Evenings with the BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It is a substantial-sized box with a bit of weight to it and you will need a free socket to plug it in and power it up. No other wires are needed, as it connects to the TV and soundbar wirelessly. I have placed the subwoofer on the floor next to the right speaker of the Theatre Trio - not ideal, but I don't have a big enough TV stand to put the Trio speakers on. I've only used the Sub 9 for a few evenings after work, connected to a BRAVIA TV and Theatre Trio. Donnie Brasco is a dialogue-heavy film with the occasional gunshot, background music in the bars and nightclub, and of course the soundtrack by Patrick Doyle. I can only give my experience of this movie, and it sounds great, with a deep richness to it. Pacific Rim and the kaiju attack on Hong Kong is the kind of scene a setup like this is made for. The explosions, the punches, the collapsing buildings and the soundtrack have a deep rumble and more body to the audio. I also tried my current favourite PS5 game MLB The Show 26 to get a sample of what the Sub 9 brings to gaming. I wasn't listening for the soundtrack - I turn the in-game music down because it gets repetitive. What I was paying attention to was the ballpark: the crowd, the low background rumble of the stadium, and the commentary over the top of it. With the Sub 9 on, the stadium felt fuller. Hits and crowd noise had more body. The commentary still came through clearly at the volume I play at, which mattered more to me than the menu music. All I can say is that the sound system felt more complete with the Sub 9 connected to the BRAVIA and the Trio.

Immersive 360° Sound That Redefines Home Cinema

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] An outstanding easy set up home theatre system that transforms how I experience movies and music. The three‑unit setup produces wide, immersive surround sound, with the centre speaker keeping dialogue crisp and clear. Also, with the help of Sound Field Optimization, it automatically analyses and calibrates audio to my living room layout using the mobile app. The 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology is impressive — it creates phantom speakers that make the room feel like a real cinema. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support add depth and realism, while the IMAX Enhanced certification ensures top‑tier performance. I also appreciate how easily it pairs with my BRAVIA TV, letting me control everything from one remote and adjust dialogue levels with Voice Zoom 3. Even standard stereo content sounds fuller thanks to the AI‑powered up mixer.

Room shaking

What a beast of a sub this is. I’ve just got add that it is incredibly heavy. The unboxing paperwork shows it’s a 2 man job, I did it on my own but I can understand why Sony recommends getting an extra body in to help. Imagine a washing machine that’s been filled with cement and the weight of this sub won’t be far off that.

Boom!

Replaced my SA-SW5 with this as part of the Sony Quad system. Wow, it’s another level of bass, no increasing of level needed with this unit. Pity you can’t add 2 to the system, it would be completely OTT then

Great Depth.

Have had for two weeks now and I’m impressed by the depth of bass produced - very low with little distortion. Expensive but good sub.

This is the Sony Sub I needed

I am very pleased with this subwoofer. I had the previous entry-level version of the Sub 3, which had no bass at all, and was hesitant on the Sub-5 because of the fact that it was probably mediocre as well. Although I have the BAR9 and the RS5 for the rear, the key area Sony skimped on was bass in the sub. In purchasing this one, I was reluctant, however. Upon arrival, from the sheer weight of it, I knew it was something special. And once connected, I played Mad Max & Sinners. It floored me.The frequencies get that sub bass for real-Low. And it's meaty, creamy. Clean base. Period. Music sounds fantastic as well. It's not the type of base that gives you a headache. It's the type of base that you feel. I sat on the actual sub9, and I could not feel it move at all, except for the air coming through the opening. It's sturdy. Period. If you are in the market for it and have the Bar 9, Bar 8, or whatever, the older A5000 or 7000, this subwoofer will satisfy mostly any need. The beautiful part about it is, if one doesn't do it, you can add a second one if you have one of the soundbars that are currently out from the 7, 8, or the 9 Bar. It would be nice to have a second one, but my room isn't that big, and it's not necessary, but it's nice to know you can do it. So having said all of this, I just want to make it clear that I'm sure people will be looking to see if this was a worthy investment although it wasn't necessarily a need, it was just for my personal satisfaction in the bass dept. To not wonder about Sonos or any of the others- if they were better. And patience has paid off. I am now satisfied. The price isn't super high when you look at Sonos and everyone else, but this subwoofer is truly, truly quality and worthy of a bass heads ultimate desire. Its a wonderful upgrade that I look to enjoy for some time to come!

Absolutely Blown Away

Not going to be long in the tooth on this one... I paired this with the Bravia Theater Quad and was quite simply blown away by the clean, impactful bass that came out of this sub. I was so impressed I just ordered a second to double the impact for my theater room setup. A 132" screen deserves sound this phenomenal! Looks are subjective, but I feel like this sub definitely steps up the wow in appearance. I personally feel like it makes their other subs look cheap. Then there's the weight... this thing is heavy which lends to it's high quality feel. I am also coming into this from a Theater Bar 9 paired with RS5's and SW5 with center channel sync out of my 65" Bravia 8 II. The quad with just one Sub 9 is a night and day difference and worth the cost of admission if you have the disposable funds to make it part of your setup.
