Review Quotes
*"By turns beguiling (as when Sulwe's mother counsels her tearful daughter) and magical (a shooting star darts into Sulwe's room to share the story of Night and Day), the volume also clearly conveys that colorism is real, and it hurts. Sulwe's story confronts it head-on, with words and images that celebrate the 'dark and beautiful, bright and strong.'"-- "Publishers Weekly, starred review" "A thoughtfully layered text and powerful illustrations address this sensitive topic [of colorism] in a uniquely nurturing way."-- "Kirkus Reviews, starred review" "A welcome celebration of Black girls, an important lesson for all kids (and grownups), and a necessary message for any child who has been made to feel unworthy of love on account of their looks."-- "Booklist"About The Author

I bought this book for my 6yo daughter (fair skin, blonde hair, blue eyes) and it has become one of her favorites. She pulls it out often and loves to read it to us. It is also beautifully illustrated. Teaches anyone to find the beauty within, but also hints, with a delicate touch fit for children, at how Black people have been made to feel bad about their skin particularly. It imparts feelings of compassion in kids who look like mine.

Beautiful Book! I think there should be an age suggestion though. My 3 year old loved the colors & the story of the sisters in the sky. My 4 year old who listens more didn't quite understand the moral of the story but internalized not wanting to be dark. It gave her color issues she didn't have before and she repeatedly said she wanted to be light and pretty like me. I had to do damage control for a couple of months, reminding her daily that she was beautiful & her peanut butter brown skin was amazing just like all shades. So I suggest 3 and under or 7 and above.

The illustration caught my eye and I opened it to a page that made me tear up so I had to continue reading. I loved it so much, I bought it for my little girl. I was so excited to bring it home and read it to her for bed time. It’s been a long time since I’ve been excited about a children’s book.

Wonderfully written book about loving the skin you have and the importance of diversity. Being white and having a black daughter this helped her understand at a 5 year old level, how important it is to have various skin colors. The illustrations are beautiful. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It helps kids learn about diversity.
