About the Book
Only 3 percent of family businesses make it beyond three generations, and less than 1% make it beyond four. Mike Young is a part of a four-generation farming family business that is proudly a part of that elite 1%. People always ask Mike, "How do you work so well with your family? What is the secret sauce? How can I do the same thing?"
He wrote The Farmer's Code to answer those questions. Mike is excited to share the code that his family has used to create and pass on their legacy. The beautiful thing about this code is that it isn't hard to do. It starts with making simple daily decisions that add up over time to make subtle, positive shifts in yourself and your relationships with others.
Enjoy the journey. Leave a legacy. Live the code.
Book Synopsis
The Farmer's Code takes you on a hero's journey of self-development. It follows a path of transformation and growth to help you become your true, highest self. This journey will lead to a greater understanding of the self and a deeper connection to one's own values and core principles, which paves the way for a long-lasting legacy. Legacies provide a roadmap for future generations, showing those who follow your footsteps what is possible as they strive to reach their full potential. Filled with personal stories of the struggles and triumphs of one American farming family, the Code shows how legacies are about more than just personal fulfillment. They can have a profound impact on the lives of others by serving as a guiding light to those who are seeking a better way to live. Just as airline passengers are instructed to see to their own oxygen masks first in the event of an emergency before helping others, legacy building has to start with the self. When you are safe, secure, and strong, you are in a much better position to turn outward to help others. It is then that you can help address societal challenges, advance knowledge and innovation, promote social change, or support the important causes you see in your community. The Farmer's Code should spark aspirations, ignite passion, and encourage everyone to strive for greatness. By considering the lasting impact you can make, you will be able to live more purposefully and leave a more positive imprint on the world.
From the Back Cover
Build a positive, permanent legacy through deliberate, daily choices.
In a world accustomed to immediate results, the concept of building a legacy may seem awkwardly out of place. Legacies take time, effort, and energy to build and are so easily destroyed in seconds. So why bother?
Whether intentional or not, every single one of us will leave a legacy behind when we pass from this life. If done right, your legacy could make a positive impact that lasts many generations beyond your own. Mike Young knows this well, as his four-generation family works, plays, and learns together in the same tight-knit community where they have lived since 1880. The Wegis-Young family business, as it is known today, has experienced the highest and lowest points of American agriculture history. They have thrived despite circumstances that threatened to destroy not only their farm, but tear their family apart.
The Farmer's Code highlights this family's strengths, weaknesses, and resilience. The secret sauce of their success boils down to emotional intelligence and fostering healthy relationships - two skills that practically anyone can learn and strengthen.
This book should bring out the best in you. It shows how to create, restore, and improve your relationships. And above all, construct the heritage you want to pass to the next generation.
