About the Book

In The HIPUS(R) Revolution, Dr. Mark Sorensen presents a bold, technology-driven solution: the HIPUS(R) system's use of patented, color-assisted Bayesian-like analysis to let physicians fully process diagnostic information, and fully integrate use of all patient and care info while interacting with patients and making decisions.

Book Synopsis

Per several studies, about half of all physicians are experiencing burnout--defined by the AMA as emotional exhaustion, depersonalization (lack of empathy for, or negative attitudes toward patients), and job dissatisfaction. The consequences include diminished patient care and increased medical errors. Despite efforts like resiliency training and work-life balance initiatives, burnout remains a system-wide crisis rather than just an individual struggle.

At the heart of the problem is flawed healthcare IT. Current electronic health record (EHR) use overloads physicians with excessive data entry, bureaucratic tasks, and inefficient workflows--diverting valuable time from patient care. The result is cognitive overload, loss of autonomy, and growing frustration among doctors.

The HIPUS(R) system will let doctors:

  • Be better clinical diagnosticians,
  • Readily explain and justify diagnostic, and related decisions to others, and
  • Document and report care with much greater ease and speed,

and thereby enjoy more respect, autonomy and job satisfaction. The current version, designed for use in emergency departments, can be modified to address burnout in other settings.

Use of such IT is, in fact, the solution to three interrelated problems:

  • Widespread physician burnout
  • Uneven care quality (adherence to evidence)
  • Out-of-control costs.

The HIPUS(R) Revolution describes the impact of those problems in the United States. The IT described can be used to solve the same or similar problems in other nations.

The book also explains physician fear of, and resistance to use of such IT, and why doctors needn't fear such change.

More than just a critique of broken systems, this book is a call to action. Dr. Sorensen outlines concrete steps for doctors, physician leaders, policymakers, and patients to advocate for IT-driven reform. Whether through policy changes, hospital initiatives, or direct adoption of new technology, every stakeholder has a role in reshaping the future of healthcare.

The future of medicine depends on smarter IT. The HIPUS(R) Revolution shows us the way forward.
