Book Synopsis

How do you learn to live deeply when your breath and body is fading?

In What Remains Is Radiant, Bill Martiner shares the ultimate treasure. Written with eye-tracking technology after a progressive neurological disease paralyzed his hands and legs, this exquisite memoir transforms a clinical tragedy into a profound spiritual practice.

Through close, meditative attention to the wild world outside his window--the seasonal flight of robins, the stubborn strength of tree bark, and the sudden gold of an autumn sunrise--Martiner steps out of the isolating loop of personal fear. He invites readers to look up at the stars, down at the turning earth, and inward at a foundational, radiant awareness that winter cannot freeze and death cannot touch.

Structured as a seasonal journal, What Remains Is Radiant traces Martiner's journey through intensive care rooms and quiet valley mornings as he uses advanced meditation to "change the channel" away from pain and fear. It becomes a powerful, year-long meditation on resilience, mortality, and the luminous nature of being.

The author writes:

Writing with your eyes is as difficult as it sounds. When every word requires such effort, you stop using them so carelessly.

I weigh each one now, turn it over, and only expend the effort of setting it down if it earns its place. Showing me, in the poverty of limited words, what abundance never could teach.

Perfect for readers of When Breath Becomes Air, this memoir offers a stunning, unforgettable blueprint for seizing every day and embracing the universe with open hands.
