Light pads are available in a range of lit surface sizes, including approximately 24 x 17 inches, 17 x 12 inches, 12 x 17 inches, 12 x 9 inches, 11.5 x 9 inches, and 9 x 6 inches.

Brightness varies by model. Common adjustable ranges include about 500–5,000 lux or 1,000–5,000 lux; some models list a wider 500–7,500 lux range, and at least one cites up to about 3,800 lux.

Power options vary by model. Many light pads are mains-powered (plug-in), some models specify they do not use a battery, and a few portable versions run on batteries—examples include a single AAA or other battery configurations.

Many light pads are ultra-thin and lightweight and include a soft protective sleeve or pouch for travel and storage. Some portable models also list a USB power cable and feature a nonslip base.

Brightness control is commonly dimmable or adjustable across a lux range; some models offer discrete preset levels (for example, three brightness settings).

Several light pads list long LED lifespans around 50,000 hours and describe the lamps as maintenance-free or low-maintenance.

Many light pads use a double-layered, firm work surface or a firmer/double-layer construction to let light penetrate thicker paper and fabrics. Some models also offer an ultra-thin, paper-like surface for a more natural drafting feel.
