Many holsters hold the phone face-inward so the screen is concealed and shielded from pockets, keys, and impacts. Combined with a soft microfiber or plush lining, this design prevents scratches and reduces abrasion while carrying.

Several belt holsters are sized to accept phones wearing standard or slim cases. However, some models specifically warn they will not accommodate bulky or thick cases. A few designs may also rely on a case for a secure fit and so may not hold a 'naked' (no-case) phone as securely.

Many holsters have a clip or hinge that folds out so the clip or back of the holster props the phone at an angle, allowing hands-free viewing. The folding clip or internal hinge positions the holster to act as a kickstand.

Pouch-style holders commonly use a rear metal clip about 2 inches long and a rear belt sleeve that fits belts up to roughly 2.25 inches (about 57 mm) wide.
