Chain cleaners are sold in several forms: liquid dip solutions, disposable wipes, gel or stick cleaners, polishing cloths, and ultrasonic cleaning machines.

Many chain cleaners are intended for common jewelry metals such as gold, silver and platinum; some formulas and ultrasonic units also note compatibility with diamonds and other precious stones. However, several products repeatedly warn that delicate or porous gems—pearls, opal, coral, and in some listings emeralds and jade—are not recommended. Follow the cleaner’s instructions and the manufacturer’s guidance for specific gemstones.

Ultrasonic cleaners come in a range of tank sizes. Example capacities include larger models with interior dimensions around 9.84" x 5.90" x 3.15" and about 2100 mL (71 oz) usable capacity, and smaller countertop units with roughly 155 x 95 x 52 mm (6.1 x 3.7 x 2.1 in) tanks holding about 600 mL (20 oz).

Ultrasonic units commonly provide preset cycle timers and, on some models, an adjustable heat function. Examples include selectable cycles from about 90 to 480 seconds and models with heat capability up to about 65°C, while other units offer multiple preset timers covering roughly 90 seconds up to 30 minutes.

Wipes and polishing cloths remove dirt and light tarnish quickly and restore shine with immediate results. Polishing cloths often also apply an anti-tarnish barrier to help slow future tarnish buildup.
