lionel electric

Most Lionel electric products are O gauge, roughly 1:48 scale. Product listings typically state either “O Gauge” or “1:48” when describing scale.

Lionel trains are made from metal and plastic. Many locomotives use diecast metal bodies, while cars, track sections, and some details are often molded plastic.

Lionel sets use three common power approaches: (1) AC/track-powered systems (listed as AC adapter or electric), (2) battery-powered sets (various battery types), and (3) non-powered cars. Individual listings specify the exact adapter or battery requirements for each product.

Common control options include handheld remotes, Bluetooth app control, and voice commands via a phone app. App and remote control typically operate engine functions and sounds; some systems also support voice streaming/recording for custom announcements.

Handheld remotes commonly use 3 AAA batteries. Battery-powered locomotives vary: some ready-to-play locos require 6 C cells, while other sets list combinations such as 4 AA plus multiple AAA cells. Check the specific product details for exact battery types and counts.

O gauge is roughly 1:48 scale; O, O-27, and 3-rail FasTrack systems use about 1.25" between outer rails, and O-gauge products generally run on those systems when the curve radius fits the cars. Some battery O-gauge sets use a dedicated 2-rail battery track system and may or may not be compatible with 3-rail FasTrack or other ready-to-play systems—check the product details for compatibility notes.
