Most cutting mats are made from vinyl/PVC, acrylic, or other plastics. Some mats use recyclable PVC and may feature a self-healing surface (a property of the mat that helps close small cuts).

Many mats feature a 1" grid plus 1/8" edge markings and angle lines; some double-sided mats have metric markings (centimeter grid and millimeter edge markings). Common angle lines include 30°, 45° and 60°.

Double-sided mats typically put imperial markings (inch grids and edge markings) on one side and metric measurements (centimeter grid and millimeter edge markings) or an unmarked surface on the reverse to support different measuring needs.

Self-healing mats in this selection are available in several popular sizes including 9" x 12", 12" x 18", 18" x 24", and 24" x 36".

Some mats fold for transport and storage (for example an 18" x 24" folding mat that folds to 12" x 18"), and other portable options combine a small mat with a non-stick ironing or pressing surface for travel and classes.

Rulers help with precise measuring and ruler/grid alignment; some rulers include a removable lip or channel to catch the mat edge to prevent slipping and have highlighted lines for easy reading and angle guides.

Available color and translucency options include opaque green and black as well as translucent white; some self-healing mats are offered in those three color choices.

Many mats and rulers include left- and right-handed numbering and multiple angle lines, with common angle guides at 30°, 45° and 60° for cutting.
