There are two common approaches: absorbent mats use millions of super-absorbent fibers to trap and dry mud and water, while hard plastic boot trays rely on raised lips or edges to contain water and dirt so it doesn’t reach the floor.
Some hard trays are made from 100% recycled polypropylene, and a number of mats incorporate recycled rubber or other recycled-content materials in their construction.
Scraping and dirt removal are provided by textured surfaces such as rubber-reinforced carpet ridges, bi-level or ribbed polypropylene profiles, and machine-tufted polyester tops that scrape heavy soil while trapping debris below the walking surface.
Non‑slip backings such as PVC, rubber, and latex are common. Some mats specify rubber‑reinforced cleated or nibbed backings designed to grip carpets and hard floors and hold the mat in place.
