Description
Book Synopsis
Devoted to one of the best known itineraries of the past, this volume tells the story of the Grand Tour and its repercussions on the history of European art and culture. The Grand Tour, a journey of culture and amusement across Europe, was a common practice from the 17th century to the first quarter of the 19th century. This book, then, reviews the stages of a tour that has left its mark on European culture. The opening essay, by Nicholas Foulkes, reviews the significance of the Grand Tour for international culture, especially British culture. Next, Fernando Mazzocca reviews its artistic coordinates, while Attilio Brilli explores some of the more obscure but intriguing aspects of the Grand Tour, with an intriguing selection of literary excerpts, a lively travel anthology. Accompanying the texts is a carefully curated selection of images, with works by many of the leading artists of the period.About the Author
Nicholas Foulkes is an English historian, author, and journalist. Much of his work has focused on the social history of the 19th century and the history of style and luxury. Fernando Mazzocca is one of the leading specialists in the Neoclassical era and the 19th century and early 20th century. He has published many books and curated major exhibitions concerning movements and monographic shows. His vast scholarly production also focuses on the history of collection, artistic literature, and relations between the arts, literature, and music. Attilio Brilli is a literary critic, a teacher, and an Italian translator, as well as a historian of travel literature. He's a tenured professor of Anglo-American Literature at the Universities of Siena and Arezzo, and he has long been a student of the mythology of the Grand Tour.Dimensions (Overall): 12.0 Inches (H) x 11.4 Inches (W) x .8 Inches (D)
