Excellent for Years

I have used three of these rail planters on my deck for several years. Each spring I order the self watering soil (one 20lb bag per planter) and it lasts all summer, roughly 4 months. The planters work amazingly well, look great, and have become a staple for us each summer. Highly recommended!

I've been using them for years and could use more. My daughter's and our house are cream color. Brown doesn't work. I use the organic potting soil, plant herbs and flowers. They're perfect! We both have 4 each.

Long time fan of these planters

I have had some of these planters more than a decade. Back when you could get them in a cream color. Two on my front porch rails. A third brown one grows herbs. Two years ago I bought 4 more in brown for my back deck. If we are going to have a serious storm, I will take them off the rail and set them on the porch/deck. Pretty much like pulling in the outdoor furniture cushions so they don't take flight. Another poster spoke of filling the water wells with soil. I don't do that. The soil in the box has been sufficent to run pansies through spring and then summer annuals. I just refertilze lightly when switching plants and replace 50% of soil each spring. In VA, so I let these winter over by putting them in vacant ground beds. And fall pansies winter over nicely.

This planter is the only one for me. It does NOT bulge out at the sides - it is made with a bit of a curve to allow maximum planting surface. The depth is nice for annuals. I highly recommend buying the organic moisture control soil because it weighs next to nothing and really minimizes the need for watering. You must remember to add soil in stages, pushing it down into reservoirs so it can wick water up to the rest of the soil/plants. Drill holes in overflow BEFORE adding soil. I love a smart design and this is it!

Good But Not Great

As others have noted, the sides do bow out and it's not clear to me how a different potting mix would solve this. Planter walls need to be thicker. Any planter that sits on top of a railing can fall off, so you have to me mindful about what to put in them. I put low growing superbells in mine and they do not fall off. Unlike my last set, these have not faded in the sun. Overall I've been happy with these.

I bought this planter 2 years ago. I too have had the sides bow out. There is no way to fix this and it doesn't look nice now. It's plastic. A heavier plastic, but still plastic. They warp. I may as well have bought a really cheap one at a discount store. I am not at all happy with it. I thought Gardner's Supply was supposed to have quality products, but some are junk just like anywhere else. All overseas junk.

Thank you for the feedback on our Self-Watering Railing Planter. We are sorry to hear that the sides are bowing out. Switching to our Self-Watering Potting Mix (#8592210) should help alleviate this issue. If you have any more questions or concerns, please give our friendly customer service staff a call at 1-800-876-5520.

I love the contemporary look. 3 fit my wooden railing perfectly. I place potted plants or 6 faux boxwood spheres. Condo is brown so the brown is perfect. I would love them in red to switch out but I am very happy with brown. Keep offering them please.

Would love this planters if they had some sort of bracket or securing mechanism as I see them tipping over quite easily. The sides bow out a little bit once flowers are fully grown & root balls get bigger. I wish they had a water gauge & filling tube like my other self watering Lechuza planters. It's hard to tell how much water to put on. Until the planter is overflowing & you know it's full. The Lechuza planters have a filling tube whisk is easy to fill & know how much water to fill. Watering from the top sometimes creates mold on the bottom of some plants I prefer watering from the tube to fill the reservoir.

I measured accurately and a 3 1/2 inch railing should work, but it doesn't. I live on the second floor and it is a safely issue to use this product. The planter tips and could fall. Gardeners' Supply refused to send me a return label. I will not use this company again.

I bought five of these to use on my deck railings. After planting them and having copious rain, I realized that these are missing drainage overflow holes! Now, the website does mention that, but who remembers a line in the description weeks later when they arrive (not my brain, lol.) Anyways, I think I may be fine next season once I drill them in correctly - I had to try and drill some of my own on the sides this year due to them being planted. Overall they look okay but do have issues with bowing out and then retracting, making huge gaps in the middle sides of the soil. Probably not my "forever" railing boxes but will live with them for a few seasons. I'd give 3.5 stars if that was an option. I would recommend them to a friend if price was the primary motivator (they look kinda cheap, and the issues mentioned above.) I wouldn't repurchase for myself, though.

I just planted beautiful flowers into this planter and then it tipped over and feel onto my roses. And - this is not the first time it happened!!! Over the period of last 5 years, it happened at least 7 times. I've had it enough and will have to find other type of railing planters.

Mixed Feelings. Like the Look But Sides Bowed Out.

These fit our railings perfectly. I was careful to measure and measure again. However, I used regular potting soil and it's like there is too much weight in the box to keep the long sides from bowing out. So, the sides are no longer straight. I haven't seen this same complaint anywhere else so not sure what the deal is. I'm trying to come up with a way to pull the sides toward each other and the only thing I can come up with is perhaps stringing one side to the other with bungee cords and hoping the plants cover up the evidence. I wanted to order more, but not sure the quality is worth the cost.

I drilled a small hole at the top of the reserve bins so that I didn't over-fill the planters. Took moments and worked well. Great product! I would absolutely recommend! Great, fast service!
