This is a great scratcher for small and large cats. They cay claw the base of the 'wall' My only issue is, there is no "cushion" on the backside to keep it from hitting whatever wall, cabinet, etc is behind it. I taped strips of cardboard on the back to keep it from banging the cabinet. The previous one was worn through and my cat was depressed until this new one came. He started clawing it while I was putting it together.
