About the Book

"Sowerby, England, 1802. Miss Genevieve Wilde--a magistrate's daughter and independent heiress--is determined to meet life's challenges all on her own, just as her late father had taught her. So when her father's pocket watch is stolen, she will do anything to get it back, especially when the local authorities prove incompetent. Upon reading an advertisement in the paper, she takes a chance and contacts a thief-taker to find the watch. It's a choice Ginny regrets when former Bow Street officer Jack Travers arrives on her doorstep. He is frustratingly flirtatious, irritatingly handsome, and entirely unpredictable, and Ginny wonders if she'll be able to resist such a man. But after Ginny discovers that the missing watch is just a small part of a larger, more frightening plot against her, she needs Jack's help more than ever. To protect her home and her reputation, the two enter into a risky charade--pretending Jack is her cousin so he can begin his investigation, starting with the household staff. As they work together to unravel the mystery, Ginny finds herself falling fast for her charismatic thief-taker, leaving her heart in just as much danger as her life. "--

Review Quotes

"Intriguing mystery and delightful romance. Witty and flirty and the banter is a joy to read."-- "Compass Book Ratings"

"Barker presents a wonderfully exciting work of Regency romantic suspense that features the scintillating thrill of coquetry and the high drama of a period mystery. Her characterization of Genevieve as a woman of gumption who balances determination with vulnerability shines. Humor and wit are delightfully laced throughout the novel and offer a colorful contrast to the story's complex emotional landscape of grief, family relationships, identity, and worth. Whether from the adrenaline of the action or the indubitable chemistry radiating from this proper romance, readers will be kept on edge until the final pages."-- "Booklist, starred review"

"Beguiling. Pairs an unusual, independent young woman with a compelling investigator to captivating effect."-- "Foreword Reviews"

"Barker does an admirable job conveying Jack and Ginny's passionate chemistry without revealing too much, while the side cast, including a disapproving butler, an unconventional set of friends, and a rival suitor for Ginny's affections, are all thoroughly enjoyable. An excellent choice for readers who love both traditional Regencies and detective mysteries."-- "Library Journal"

"Opposites attract in this adorable Regency romance. When the authorities refuse to believe Miss Genevieve "Ginny" Wilde's claims that the watch bequeathed to her by her late father, a magistrate, was stolen, not misplaced, Ginny hires thief-taker Jack Travers to investigate. To preserve Ginny's reputation, they're forced to pretend to be cousins while he's residing at her estate--but their lingering stares and obvious attraction threaten the ruse. Jack proves easy to crush on: he's witty, sweet, and thoughtful, with just a touch of a bad boy persona. Unique characters and a fast-paced mystery add flavor to this sweet romance."-- "Publishers Weekly"

About the Author

Joanna Barker firmly believes that romance makes everything better, which is why she has fallen in love with writing Regency romances. When she's not typing away on her next book, she's listening to podcasts, eating her secret stash of chocolate, or adding things to her Amazon cart. Joanna's books have received praise from Publishers Weekly, the Historical Novel Society, Readers' Favorite, and more. She thinks being an author is the second-best job in the world--right after being a mom. She is just a little crazy about her husband and three wild-but-loveable kids.

Oh my darling 😍 have you read this book yet?? @authorjoannabarker, you are exceptional. Every book I read I fall more madly in love with your writing. But Jack Travers. You write these male characters that have personalities so large you have to say their first and last name together. Nicholas Avery, Jack Travers, they just have that extra “oomph” every writer is wanting to write and every reader is wanting to fall in love with. Way to go lady. Bravo 👏🏻👏🏻 Look, I’m late to the game with promoting this book, so I’m sure a lot of you have already read this book. But if you haven’t!! Then let this be your sign that it’s time to snatch it up and put it as your next read. It’s regency with some fun. I mean, I love regency, it just takes it a step further than ball rooms (it does have one of those) and brings in mystery, thief takers (fancy name for paid vigilantes), lots of flirtatious banter, and of course a tree. Is it even a Joanna Barker novel if it doesn’t have the most perfect banter? Lady, you have me hook, line and sinker for your books. So if you’re looking for swoon, adventure, and good ol’ historical fun, this is it my friends. Give Ginny and Jack Travers a chance, they won’t let you down.

Genevieve Wilde, a feisty little redhead whose father left her a large inheritance, including Wimborne, her family home. “Ginny” enjoyed her new role at Wimborne no matter how hard it was. Her life was filled with running her household, keeping up appearances and missing her father. She dismissed the need for help from anyone until theft, coupled with her magistrate not taking her seriously, bid her find another way to locate her father’s stolen watch. Enter Mr. Jack Travers, the former Bow Street Runner she hired to find her father’s watch, suddenly missing after a dinner party. With shades of dashing heroes like one might encounter in The Three Musketeers or Robin Hood, Joanna Barker displays her ability to weave a story with depth and plot twists within an exceptionally paced storyline. This quote from the blurb is an apt description of our hero… “He is frustratingly flirtatious, irritatingly handsome, and entirely unpredictable, and Ginny wonders if she’ll be able to resist such a man.” Readers of historical romance with mystery elements will adore this swoony jaunt. In my opinion, this book has no flaws save Jack’s name being said a bit too much. It is a 5* read through and through with a 5* narration. Audiobook: Elizabeth Knowelden is a narrator I will definitely listen to again. Her accent, diction and pacing were so well suited for this storyline while her portrayal of each character kept me present in every scene. The chapter breaks were hailed by a pause and chapter number to keep the reader on track. Knowelden and Barker have collaborated well to produce an excellent story with an excellent narration. This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes and no bad language. I received this book from the author/publisher free of charge, with no expectation of a positive review.

A Heart Worth Stealing, is a romance, suspense, mystery, and page turner. Yes, I need to find answers, and although I had my suspicions, I was partly right, but there is so much more. This is a story about a family, sisters, but no relationship, a story of a missing watch, that becomes so much more, but brings in a thief taker aka as a private investigator! Wow, there is so much action, and seems everyone is under suspicion, including the help. This is Genevieve and Jack's story, but it is also Catherine and Genevieve's and their father. We begin looking for a watch, but then there is vandalism, and arson, guns being fired, and then we wonder whom will survive! I loved this story, it kept my attention from beginning to end, and then I still wanted more! I'll be look for more ready by Joanna Barker! I received this book through the Publisher Shadow Mountain, and was not required to give a positive review.
