Description

About the Book

By 2010, there will be 25 million AIDS orphans. Left alone, they will be ripe candidates for radicalization and exploitation by dictators and terrorists, and civilization will deteriorate to an unrecognizable point. Each chapter provides links to organizations that are working on solutions to this problem.

Book Synopsis

A Child-Headed Household is formed every 15 seconds...
Thousands of children around the world are orphaned daily when their parents die of AIDS. When siblings stay together to form a family, it is called a Child-Headed Household. They desperately want to live together, resisting attempts to separate them amongst relatives or orphanages. The eldest sibling, often only 10 years of age, becomes the parent, raising and caring for their younger siblings. AIDS Orphans Rising takes you through the daily lives of these Child-Headed Households:

  • What do they eat?
  • Where do they live?
  • How do they survive?
  • What can you do to help?

Each chapter provides background information, stories and real solutions and actions that you can take to help these children not only survive, but succeed and prosper.

"The first edition of AIDS Orphans Rising was concerned with the invisible (and exploding) crisis of child-headed households in Africa. It was originally intended to serve as a resource guidebook for concerned teachers, researchers, nonprofit organizations, and policymakers. A funny thing happened; other people began reading the book, too! Sister Mary Beth has many beautiful stories of generous strangers, young and old, who have approached her to offer help. As a result, the perspective of this second edition has been reframed to inform concerned citizens everywhere."
-- Connie Mariano, MD, FACP, author of The White House Doctor

100% of all profits from this book will go to help the Child-Headed Households

Review Quotes

Sister Mary Beth stirs the embers on every person's possibility to make some difference in addressing this crisis. The inclusion of the orphans' personal stories and photos bring the text to life. Every 15 seconds... In the time it took to read this blub another child is orphaned and becomes the head of her or his band of siblings in search of daily bread and hope.
-- Avis Clendenen, D.Min., Ph.D. Professor Emerita, Saint Xavier University/Chicago

Though the western world hardly talks any more about people with AIDS, tens of millions of AIDS orphans are left to fend for themselves in the developing world. Filippini Sister Mary Elizabeth Lloyd shares firsthand experience how her religious community cares for them and invites the rest of the world to join in. Her scientific and health backgrounds expose the enormity of the problem. Her compassionate conscience shames the world to a human problem it cannot ignore.
-- Fr. Alexander M. Santora, Catholic pastor, and "Faith Matters" columnist for The Jersey Journal

I personally know Sister Mary Elizabeth and totally endorse her and her book. She is coming from her heart and sincerely wants to make a difference in the world. This book is a treasure and a guide.
-- Joe Vitale, author of The Key, costar in The Secret

Here is a realistic, meticulously-researched look at the problems faced by the millions of AIDS orphans in Africa, and the people who are attempting to care for them. But even more, this is a story of the transcendence of the human spirit, as we learn about children facing their challenges with incredible resilience, determination, and yes--even joy. We in the west must not give up on them, because they are certainly not giving up on themselves.
-- Jillian C. Wheeler, CEO, author, philanthropist

AIDS Orphans Rising will grip your heart. The needs will linger in your consciousness long after you have read the final word and closed the covers of the book. Sister Mary Elizabeth Lloyd has presented the case for these children. Now it is up to us, the readers, to decide which suggested action steps we can take to help them succeed.
-- Richard Blake, ReaderViews

Parents want to teach their children to be compassionate toward others. School and youth groups are always looking for worthy projects. Adults can get the book, share with the children whatever information they believe is appropriate for their age, and then work together to come up with ways to assist. This is not a "fun" or pleasant book to read, but it contains information about our world, however heart-wrenching it may be, which we and our children need to know in order to love our neighbors as ourselves.
-- Virginia S Grenier, Stories For Children
