Groomed at Sotheby's and hungry to keep climbing, Lacey charms everyone with her magnetic charisma and liveliness. Her ascension to the highest tiers of the city parallel the soaring heights--and, at times, the dark lows--of the art world and the country from the late 1990s through today.

Beautiful twentysomethings in the contemporary art scene of NYC and Russia scheme and pose and flaunt their imagined superiority — with some clever twists. However, I did not like any of the characters, particularly not the protagonist. Think: a conceited Daryl Hannah in the 1986 movie “Legal Eagles.” Yes, even though it was written in 2010 it feels like the 1980s. I bought this just recently but, after the first line, realized I had already read it a few years ago. Hoping Target will let me return it, as it’s pristine. I have no intention of rereading it. BTW, the “22 lush, four-color art reproductions” are very pale, grainy black-and-whites in this paperback version.
