Q: How far apart are the slats and what are they made of?

A: Yes you can use box spring, however, the visible height of the headboard will be compromised.

Q: Is it possible to remove the legs and put this directly on the ground (for a toddler bed) and add the legs later?

A: There are also center support legs in the middle to support the slats and the frame, without the legs it might not hold
